I work at a bank, and you all would not believe how people just throw around their SSN. people come in with a deposit ticket and don't know their account number so they write down their SSN and get us too look it up that way and then its also written on the receipt (carbon copy), and we find them on the floor and in the trash all the time....... people come in with no deposit ticket and just hadn us money to deposit into their account....I'm sorry, but if they hand someone 425 bucks, the teller could easily pocket 20 of it and come back and say that the person never gave me an amount of how much the deposit was for and it will be their word against the customer... so just to protect the you all as a customer...be sure not to write your SSN on the deposit ticket for everyone to see and always at least write down how much you are depositing to keep from getting ripped off.....we are getting emails DAILY of people accounts who have been hacked into via account number/ssn

I had a teller write my account number on a card years ago and I carry it in my wallet. Anyone who found it would think it is a telephone number the way it is written. There are so many numbers in my wallet even if you knew what you had it would take forever to figure out which one it was.

** I can't ever remember the PIN to my debit card.
So, I have a colleagues business card w/ "Extension # xxxx" written on the back as a reminder.

those cards are fine, because even if someone had that info, they would have to present their ID. But to just give out SSN like that is crazy.

You young'uns wouldn't believe it...used to be you HAD to give your SSN for ID...that was your student ID number when I was in college back in the early 80's. Same for HS...it was on everything.

Old enough to remember that mechanics used to engrave tools with either SS# or DL#

Any vets looking at this go to the VA??? You use your social for everything there!!!!

Sent from my microwave using a teleportation device.

Ok, so lets say you happen to find someones SSN. Then what can you do with it that would benefit you if you didn't already have the rest of their info?

I have never been TOO concerned about my DL number. SSN, yes, but not DL.

Afaik not much you can really do with a DL number.

That's the way it was when I was in high school/college in the late 90s too.

My dad did that to everything when I was a kid! Tools, TVs, VCRs, Cameras, etc. I guess he thought if it ended up in a pawn shop it'd be easy for them to find him.

Most of the other info is pretty easy to find. Say someone knows your SS#. They can get your full name and address off real estate records, mail, etc. Age and birthday is relatively easy to gather, especially if they get access to your drivers license or it is listed on Facebook. That's about all you need to apply for a credit card and go to town.

Thats the way it worked up until 2008 actually, at least at App, then they gave us a something called a Banner ID number, which I never learned.

Nope, you've got it exactly backwards.

The problem is that banks act as though your SSN... an easy to discover and widely available number... is a secret that's a reliable means of positively identifying a customer.
