ok I have a 88 isuzu trooper that I would like to keep on the low budget and be able to wheel at uwharrie. it has open diffs and I would like to weld the rear. here is the question.
Will I still be able to drive it around town and would it be ok to weld both front and back?
thanks in advance for the info but im a noob to this and I just want to have fun without breaking the bank.

also, the trooper is not my daily driver but I do however use it locally with occasional trips on the highway.

I'd just throw a spartan in it since you plan to drive it on the street. Welded rear isn't to bad, just takes some time to get used to it as with mechanical lockers.

You can run on the street with the rear welded. But, it acts just like a spool and will wear tires out much faster.

However, this assumes the welding is done right and is sufficient or you will have a bad day real quick.

if you do this & drive it on the street much your axles will fail faster due to fatigue. This will happen when you need them the most. Welded axles are better left on the trail...

Speaking from experience, I'd NEVER, weld the front! I just could never understand the "Can't steer it" thing, till I did mine.:shaking:
Get a lock right of similar, for the front, if not for both ends.

I recommend leaving the carrier and gears in the axle when you weld. I cut out some pieces of tin to wrap on the gears and such for splatter. The chances the carrier will warp is dramatically reduced. If you were in Durham, I'd do it for ya.

I drove a bronco on the street with welded rear for years with no problems. Went through tires though.

weld it, have fun, youll love the traction, just be carefull on street like they said and down steep muddy hills, it will push you in a direction sometimes, otherwise I love welding better than lockers, more of a guarantee for me and free, and if it explodes the rear, well jeep rear ends are dime a dozen but 12 years of welded rear jeep axles never had a issue. have fun

thanks guys for the input. does anyone know someone that can weld the rear for me? I would like to weld the rear and get a locker for the front or just leave it open for now.
Mine was done at Tarheel 4 Wh. Dr., Charlotte. I decided I couldn't lay in the floor & weld it. Been several years, so I can't speak for the price.
