Just finished registration to this great site and thought I would introduce myself. I bought my wife a 1990 Jeep YJ for Valentines Day this year. And since then have decided to go just a little deeper into the mud. I think I did pretty well for $1600, even if thats not the end! I hope to get rid of the emission crap and update the carb ASAP. But other than that I will probably need the expertise of others thus the reason for this post.

I am a carpenter by trade and have developed any mechanical skill I have out of needing to get to work on time over the years. I am alot more comfortable on a ladder than under a hood. Having said that I also have a 1976 MG Midget that has won a few local car show awards.

I hope I don`t try anyone`s patience with what would seem obvious questions. And thanks in advance for the help!!

lol, welcome. dont sell the jeep....jeeps are good to learn on, eventually you will have turned every bolt on it.

Thanks guys... I knew that opinions would be very specific to make and model, and even to engine on this forum. That`s part of what makes it great, even when someones bragging on one and putting off on another there`s good advice to be had. And dont worry by the time we get finished, this thing will be a franken-jeep.

Then I got it and parted it out and made a butt load off of it!

Keep the Jeep. Easy to work on and parts and accessories available from many sources. The haters are just jealous

Welcome!

a high rise intake and a Holley! At least to start.

Unless you're gonna be doing 1/4mile or exclusive mud drags (you mentioned mud)... neither are conducive for wheeling. Begin reading and when you think you've read enough, go back over everything AGAIN. You wallet will thank you in the long run...

sell the yj... get an xj ^.^ .. xj's are extreamly easy to work on. come with a 4.0L HO that last forever.

There is nothing wrong with a YJ...and thats even coming from an XJ guy. Just wheel it, break it, fix it and repeat.

welcome ! for the efi swap stuff... go buy a $200 XJ off craiglist and swap in the 4.0l you will have almost everything you need right there. Maybe even a trans/tcase to boot..

/\ what he said. xj, tj or zj's can be had for various amounts and engines. 4.0s with the comp, etc can be had for 250-350. if you want more power you could find a 4.7 or 5.9 and keep a lot of things you have. start dropping in small blocks and your going to need to beef other areas. keep it simple while your learning.

and most of all research, research, research. don't trust one person to give you info as their jeep, funds and style of wheeling might not match what you have, your money situation and what direction you want to go.

welcome
