Finding out the hard way that an key ingredient for brewing beer, hops, is highly toxic to dogs. My dog is currently in a condition called Malignant Hyperthermia. Basically the dog is over heating. Increased body temperature and HEAVY panting which could lead to death. We're treating her now with antibiotics and cold showers. Too late to induce vomiting. I was completely unaware that Hops were toxic to Dogs, apparently more so to Greyhounds and Labs.

Dogs aren't interested in unused hops. I guess the smell is too pungent, but used hops have soaked up sweat malt sugars and they like that.

If you deal with a Vet, tell them about it. apparently not many vets are aware of this and with Homebrew growing like it is, they need to be. I just want to get the word out. so please pass it around to anyone that you think will benefit from it.

they kill moles too. one of them ate my plant a couple years ago and it was nearby completely unharmed. like it just ate the root and gave up but to stick to the topic yes I knew that and it's something everyone should be aware of.

hate to hear this man, wishing you the best. them ole mutts get to be like part of the family

I will pass this on to my Sister, she runs a foster and can help get it out. Thanks.

Got home to a much happier looking puppy. Cold showers and antibiotics seem to be working. Last night and this morning was a far different story.

Thats a nice looking boxer.Good to hear it is doing better . I know I love mine and would hate for anything bad to happen to her.

Ya, I usually don't strain the hops out when going to the fermenter. I just siphon down to the bottom sludge or dump all the wort in the fermenter. This time I strained it through a mesh bag and just dumped the hops on top of my compost. She found it and ate some. Not much because when I got home I went out in the freezing rain/snow and picked up quiet a bit to get rid of it.

Grapes and raisins are also toxic to dogs. I've read about sooo many things since I got my blue tick that I had no idea were bad for dogs.

Along the same lines, goats can pretty much eat anything except wild cherry trees. Apparently, there's something toxic in them that goats can't handle. Seems odd to me, but it's true.

Glad your dog is doing better!
