its on a 92 jeep cherokee. i installed like the directions said to and adjusted to what i thought was right for the 2 wheel drive like directions said. when i shift to 4low it only went to the neutral spot. got underneath the jeep and disconnected the cable shifted the transfer case to 4low then adjusted to that, now it won't go into 2 wheel drive and it grinded going from 4low forward towards 4high and 2 wheel drive. could i have installed the shifter linkage tab wrong? or could i have installed it right but had the transfer case in 4high when i thought it was in 2 wheel drive? or do i just need to keep adjusting it? if anyone has this set up and could snap a picture of it in 2wheel drive that would help a lot to make sure i had the case in 2 and not 4.

this one I marked where 2 wheel was when I first adjusted it and attached cable where the black dot is, now you can see that it doesn't quite make it all the way back to the original spot

this just shows how the cable is ran threw the brackets, also the end pieces are screwed in as far as possible. The top one bottoms out on the piece before ending the thread the bottom is screwed as far as threads will go. Still ending up in neutral when shifter is at 4 low and doesn't want to go back into 2 wheel drive very easy.

if anyone is in the waynesville area and wants to take a look and help me figure it out there is a 6 pack of your favorite brew waiting

@DLOR , @Cory , @Bhudgins you all said you had one when my 4 wheel drive messed up a while back any of you have any problems or insight on whats going on?

mine appears to be different than yours. I have no cables and it replaces the entire shifter and linkage. it uses a bracket off the transfer case and has multiple holes to "fine tune" adjustments. I did it by laying underneath and had my brother shift through the gears until it was smooth as butter.

Thanks I think that is there older version. I have a feeling once I see what is wrong I'm going to feel like a dumb ass but at least it will be working then

I don't have one of these setups but if your adjusting the cable at one end of the shift pattern (point A) and when you go to the complete opposite end of the pattern (point B) it doesn't reach, then to me it sounds like your cable doesn't have enough stroke to make it from point A to point B. Could the shifter not be going all the way? Did they send the wrong cable?

You reuse the stock shift handle, and use a new piece that attaches to the trans case in stock location. When the cable is in 2 high closest the two attachment points are the cable is screwed into it's shortest possible way, in 4 low the longest way it's probably an inch shot using the 2 high adjustment (hope that makes since). I'm going to call Novak tomorrow and talk to them the instructions say to adjust from the copper/brass nuts on the lower bracket that is attached to the Trans case and only adjust from there once everything is adjusted for 2 high. What I can't figure out is how that adjusts anything the cable runs inside of the sleeve that is attached to the threads for the nuts on either end.

I can't fully remember how I did mine (near 3 years ago) but I think there is a good post on jeepforum on how to adjust it(I assume the tj is about the same. It looks really close). . It was a bit of a pain but once right it is awesome.

Yea mine was a bitch till i got it right looks like the piece the hooks up to the transfer case shifter arm needs adjusted out. And then you can adjust the two nut's away from the transfer case as far as they will let you go i don't know if that makes sense you can call me in the morning and I'll try to talk you through it pm me and ill give you my #

so this thing still isn't right I've been tinkering with it on and off. finally got mad tore the whole thing apart pulled the shifter and made sure it was right, gonna put it all back together tomorrow and start from the start again. i saw someone had a similar problem and drilled a hole farther up the shifter on the t-case might end up trying that... Any one available to help after 12 tomorrow???? ill be free from then till around 5. im in clyde

Did you check your shifter handle against the template in the instructions to make sure it was bent correctly?

Mine only took a minute to adjust. I had the cable too long at first. Took a few turns out of it, and that nailed it.

The nuts on the sleeve don't matter. The adjustment on the shifter end only matters if you're running out of thread on the tcase side.

Checked the bend it was correct. I just spend about to hours looking everything over and realized it's a 242 case not a 231 like previous owner had told me (live and learn check everything for myself) did a little looking and looks like I just need to make my shift gate on the tunnel longer since it's still for a 231 and possible add a hole to the lever on the transfer case side. Saw several different people needing to do this.
