I was doing some sticker designs and I came up with an interesting idea. Custom Novelty URE Season Passes. Not real season passes of course but they would be customizable. You could change the year, color, and lettering where the Pass # is (could put your name, something crazy like "Web Wheeler" etc). A couple ideas came up, like nostalgia passes for those that have been wheeling at Uwharrie for a while (even maybe before the current trail pass design). Put the year as the first year you started coming to URE etc. Here is what the quality would be ("NOT A REAL TRAIL PASS" would not be printed):

Maybe work out something with Deborah to where we sell them for say $10 a pop and $5 goes to the Forest Service to help keep the trails clean/open. I could have them printed and sold at $5 a piece, but I think it would be much better to involve the FS etc.

I think this is a neat idea - but I have a suggestion.
Unfortunately, not everybody in this world (or even on this board!) is all that bright... there will be confusion about whether this is a real pass, people thinking you're trying to scam or whatever. Plus the FS might get a little pissy about the confusion, when they see them the first time.

However - you could make it as a "season pass display" or "season pass holder" - e.g. design it with a place to attach your current season pass, this is essentially "decoration" for it.
Kind of like the novelty cases for ticket stubs etc.

If you had something that stuck to the inside of the windshield, and "framed" the actual pass that ataches to the out side, you could then have a permanent decoration of sorts that has any of the things you talked about. One downside, many people like to display several years on the rig, kind of like braggin that they've been here awhile. For this idea, you'd have to scrape off last years pass, and put on the new one in the same spot. for $10, I'd probably buy one.

I like the concept but I don't like that they look so similar- unless you only sold past years so they would be invalid anyway. But you get the idea started someone might try to get out of the $30 and make fake ones..

Counterfeiting was an issue that came to my mind when I debated posting this idea. First and foremost I would hope people understand that the money we spend on trail passes is very important, and counterfeiting would only hurt everyone so someone could save a couple bucks. In reality these days anyone could take a high res picture of a trail pass, slightly modify it, and pass it off as genuine.

That being said there would have to be rules applied to applications for the custom trail passes.

1.)Post-dated Trail Passes Part 1: Any trail pass made with the current or any future year would not be allowed to use numbers only in the "Trail Number" area. A combination of letters and numbers or just letters would have to be used, such as "Web Wheeler", or "NC4X4" etc.

2.)Post-dated Trail Passes Part 2: Any trail pass made with the current of any future year would not have the mono-color Forest Service logo. It would bear the Gold/Yellow Forest Service logo not used on genuine Trail Passes.

The goal here is for people that enjoy stickers/collecting their trail passes etc (as mentioned by Chris) have something to put on their rig. And at the same time support the FS in keep the trails clean/open. Another idea would be to make "Official Custom Trail Passes" that would be actual real passes. And sell them for $40-$50. That way it would be an authentic trail pass, there would be no counterfeit issues etc. But that process would be a bit more complicated.

Either way I plan on talking to Deborah about this next time I am out that way, and if there is an interest who knows what may happen. The "season pass holder" is an interesting idea, what would we put on it to make it stand out? And I would need to measure my season pass on my truck to see what kind of dimensions we are looking at. But keep the ideas coming, this could turn into another great way for us to support the FS and the OHV Trail System.

Here is an example of a nostalgia pass for someone that maybe wheeled at Uwharrie back in 1986:

(And I see my little trail pass re-creation made it onto the front page as clip art. Nice to see others have read this thread.)

I am not knocking the idea, but just wanted to add that a Ranger once told me that all the folks that left their old passes on their rig, for whatever reason(looks cool, nostalgia, likes stickers) were actually in violation of the law. The ranger said that after each day, (unless it's a season pass) that all passes must be removed from vehicle.

In other words, you're not supposed to ride around with old passes, just to look cool.

This may not have anything to do with this thread, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyways.

His reasoning was simply that folks might cheat the system and try to use a week old pass or something. As a precaution, all invalid passes must be removed from clear visability when they expire.

I dont know the actual laws, but a real ranger told me this, so thats probably the truth.

Great train of thought but in reality, not a good product.

Why would anyone buy this when they could buy the real thing instead?

Just design some cool Uwharrie stickers. Have bears, aliens, deer, guns, hot dogs, mud tires and other random funny cool stuff on em.

Oh, if you can make a sticker of an alien sitting on top of a pile of mud tires, eating a hot dog while shooting a bear that is attacking a deer, then I would buy that.

I think a lot of other people would just for the WTF factor.

the reason for it is to show that you have been wheeling at ure for x amount of years, donate to the fs and to ure. some people might want that and others may not ( the part about wheeling for x amount of years). just like some people say ford is better that chevy and others say chevy is better that ford. its a preference. my 'preference' is it is a good idea as long as it doesnt get twisted. and yes preference is my word of the day :D btw i own 2 fords a chevy and a dodge so im all over the boat

Kurt pretty much nailed it on the head. I am not sure about the laws regarding old trail passes, but it doesn't make a lot of sense if it applies to the season passes also. I sort of understand if it applies to day passes, but season passes (like day passes) are color coded. So there is no way really to re-use a season pass for the next year.

Maybe its just me but I get the idea of keeping old season passes on your truck as memorabilia. To some it may be bragging rights, and to some it may be a way to remember the past trail rides. As far as the deer/alien/bear/hotdog sticker goes, it could be done. I have made quite a few other humor 4 wheeling stickers as it is.
