A little background. I have had 3 jeeps. My last jeep had a 4" RE lift with rear detroit front no-slip and SYE and 33 swampers 4.56 gears. Did all the work myself. Sold that jeep many years ago (I got kids) and ended up with a mall crawler TJ to get my fix. I have given it to my 18yo son who loves it.

This TJ has a 2" OME with factory control arms, a 1" body with 1" motor mount and no SYE and no transfer case drop, no vibes. Factory D44 and d30 (3.73) both open. Tires are 33" Nitto Terra grapplers.

He wants to go to URE this summer. I'd like to take him. You know everyone starts somewhere. I am wondering what the wheeling would be like with open diffs, 33's and 2" lift and an 18yo novice wheeler. I have not been to URE in 10 years so I don't even remember what trails to take with open diffs. I don't anticipate a lot of wheeling in this jeep because he is headed to ECU in the fall. If I put a locker in it then it would be a $250 Aussie. I don't know if I care to have him running around with an auto locker though. I know the street manners of an auto locker and I guess I could make sure he learns to coast through turns and be cool on ice/snow/wet roads so the rear won't break loose and to be ready when it unloads going done the highway.

only game changer would be if it rained but I wouldn't let that keep me from havin a good time. He'll have a blast reguardless.
Tell him to look us in the NCKrawlers when he gets to Greenville. We have several colledge age members and we'll watch out for him.Meet second tuesday of the month at 7pm at Parkers Barbecue.

Take the 4wd-101 Class with Scott Fields if you can. That will solve the locker problem. There's really no need for lockers at Uwharrie if you know how to drive.

bone stock TJ on highway terrains with two babies in car seats in the back, so long as it's dry.

That reminds me of my first trip there. Bone stock but the seats were empty.

I took my stock yj out there years ago and had no issue following the group I was with while they played on the harder stuff. Common sense and knowing the limitations of your ride will take you farther than you think. Alot (not all) of the carnage comes from the "hammer down don't give a damns".

You will be fine. I had to get yanked up the first ledge but that was in the rain. I am open f/r on 33s. Uwharrie will be a great experience for your son to learn the ins and outs of off road driving.

Yeah, you don't need lockers at uwharrie to ride. Some COMMON SENSE will get you a lot farther in a stock rig than a built rig with a WATCH THIS BRAH! WOOOOO!!!! attitude. Just my .02.

id put that money into a winch. When vehicle and driver ability run out, that winch will get you out of there! a locker wouldnt be a bad investment either...with that being said, a stock vehicle is a blast at Uwharrie!

Winch will help get you unstuck.
A locker will help get you into places where you'll be really stuck (and need that winch)...
