NP 231 rear snap ring

Having trouble getting my 231 back together, I need to "pull" the main output shaft rearward to get the retaining ring on. The shaft is very tight on the rear output bearing, and it won't slide back to expose the retaining ring groove. I can look thru the speedo gear hole and see the shaft is barely engaging the oil pump. Any ideas?
 
I'm at about 9:50 in this video...about in the same boat this guy was in. Sounds like I need to dick around for 4h30mins more :eek:ops:
I put a pipe over the output shaft and beat on it...the bearing is all the way pressed into the rear output hsg.
