A few weeks ago I replaced the trans (45RFE) in a co-workers '99 Grand Cherokee WJ. ( owner inflicted, failed to properly install trans filter, wasted the fluid pump)

All was well till about a week ago, any speed over 50 mph the vehicle with jerk and shudder. No check engine light, so I doubt the trans is slipping.

vehicle has 170k, when I pulled the t-case I did drain the fluid (appeared to be original, was pretty nasty looking) and the refilled with the Mopar fluid for the NP247.

There isn't any noise when this shudder happens, my first thought was the tires were not matched ( and they were not) and the T-case was fighting itself trying to keep things in sync.

Installed new tires all around, the shudder is still there.

This IS an AWD vehicle, so there is a viscious clutch in the t-case, as well as a chain.

Anyone ever dug inside one of these? Cash is tight so the repair would need to be as painless as possible. I have found chins for $100ish, and a few seal and bearing kits, how about a viscious coupler ?

Ideas ?

I am not an expert, but my 02 Overland has the same t/c. After researching mine, I found that a lot of 247's fail, specifically, the viscous coupler fails and is expensive to replace. What some folks have done is to swap the 247 out for a 242.

When I bought mine, it was a lil "hitchy" when turning tightly and what not, it would not quite feel "right". I changed the fluid out for the mopar 247 fluid and it went away. Someone suggested after changing the fluid to do numerous tight, "figure 8"s" to fully work the fluid into the t/c. The figure 8's really worked out all the hitching.

Hope you get it figured out
