NP231 input planetary ring

I'm swapping out the input planetary gear assembly from a one 231 to another. There is a steel ring pressed into the front half of the case. Do I need to keep this ring with the planetary assembly, kind of like a differnetial ring and pinion are matched? Without major heat/cold, or some crazy puller setup that I don't have, I don't see these rings coming out.

While this is by no means the "correct" answer, I will say that I just swapped the input/sun gear from one 231 into another. Kept the same planet carrier and ring gear (outer shell). It doesn't make noise yet.
