Anyone ever heard of a NP231 t-case being run empty? BTW 90 Jeep wrangler 6cyl 5 speed 4in lift, never heard any noise or signs of it being low. But one day my drive shaft fell out (straps got loose and sheered off a bolt) and bent my output shaft. So we decided to go ahead and put a sye in and when i went to drain it nothing came out. When we split the case there was a ton of metal shavings and slivers plus about an ounce of black ATF in the case but overall it didn't "look" too bad. Gonna put all new seals and a new oil pump back with the sye parts in so any other suggestions would be appreciated.

wow thats crazy! almost no fluid in there at all???

if your 4x4 is working good and no noise or binding id seal it back up and throw in some royal purple and roll on. i know royal purple is high but you cant beat that stuff. im not a jeep owner yet but i will be soon. jeep stuff is tuff. you might have gotten lucky.
im jus wondering where it went? didnt see any signs of leaks prior to this?

Your guess is as good as mine to where it went it. I've had it for about three months and it leaks oil from the motor so everything underneath is covered so either i missed it leaking or it was empty before i got it. PS this is my third jeep and I've never had this happen before but when you get a jeep you'll absolutely love it!!!!

I have seen something similar before. a club member had a stretched chain, so he got a junk yard 231 for the chain. when we opened his case, there was absolutely no fluid in it, none... main shaft was fine, so we just swapped his sye to the new case. he had no leaks in the driveway or under the jeep, no signs of fluid.

man thats crazy, shows how tough some jeep parts are though!
i plan on getting the 4 door wrangler next year, heard lots of bad things about the 3.8 though. with the right gears i can deal with it till my wallet allows me to do a hemi swap.

My buddy ran one everyday for six months with a hole the size of a silver dollar in the bottom of the case. He wrecked the jeep before the transfer case ever went out. It was a 231 in a cherokee I believe

UPDATE

Well for an update we started cleaning it and it was okay in there, 2 hi gear was worn some but usable. The shift pads on the forks were toast so we ordered new ones of those and put her all back together. Yesterday we filled it up and i drove it around in 4 (CV Drive shaft still has to be ordered) and it was great no leaks or anything!!!
