Before I tap out this brand new Timken seal, I want to make sure I didnt overlook something stupid.

I had a small drip on my 95 XJ before I broke my rear driveshaft, do figured I'd replace the output seal. AZ gave me an open bag Timken 2506. It looked a lot different than what I had before, it had some rubber dust shield condom sheat thingy wedged in. It was hard to visually see/feel if the actual sealing lip was tight on the slip section of the driveshaft (both broken old one and used replacement measure 1.505").

Upon reassembly, I spooged some RTV on the tailshaft housing, maybe blocked the fluid passage? after the bearing. Dunno, after the first test drive, I had a major leak, and it was obvious that while driving, I was pumping fluid past the seal and all over the rear undercarriage.

I took it apart, can't quite see in there, didnt want to destroy this rubber dustshield thingy trying to tear it out. Something tells me this new seal didnt have a little spring around the seal lip, but I cant quite remember.

So I guess I guess I'll go back to AZ and get an unopened seal, see if its any different?

back to Auto zone today, had them look up the seal for 89 YJ 258...that's what I'm using to rebuild my rear driveshaft, same dims etc (thanks for the tip Jody Treadway). Timken seal 4370N is ticket. AZ computer showed this is the seal for 95XJ/4.0L with NP242 and 249, but not 231.
