Finally got the dodge back together and on the road Tuesday night, blew out the brand new 5th gear today, whats that like 4 days? :shaking:

I'm thinkin it might be something I did wrong when putting it back together since it's so soon, IDK, but at least this time I wasn't being stupid hot dogging it when it went. I was towing the jeep, but I was only at part throttle already not hammering down when it let go :handed:

I can't keep anything running, lets hope the Z71 Tranny (that I just replaced 4K ago) holds together till i get the dodge fixed again, its acting real weird and has burnt fliud and clutch material floating around in it :shaking: Lets also hope that I didn't chew up 5th gear in the dodge again cause I welded it to the mainshaft so I'm gonna have to get a whole nother tranny this time not just replace the gears :handed:

you will just need a mainshaft aftermarket ones are not to terribly expensive. im guessing your weld broke.... the nut and the 5th gear was all that you took off wasn't it. Just bring it to me this time and ill put a mainshaft in it and fix her up real nice.

mystery/problem solved. i've seen your welds.:flipoff2:

Yea yea :flipoff2:

I mean I welded both the gear in place then i jammed the nut on and welded it in place to . . .

Its not doing the same thing it did last time either, last time i could tell the teeth were gone by the scrambled up metal noise it was making, this time it sounds like something just fell of and is clanking around, but every once and a while it will catch hard bang and the whole truck shakes, I'm wondering if something having to do with the countershaft gear or w/e its called fell off. IDK just gotta pull it apart again and see :handed:

I think there are 2 things you are missing. Lock-tite and torque specs. I've only had one thing just randomly break or come loose (ring gear bolt), and ever since then, I have locktited everything, and had no stray fasteners.

This comment may bring the death of mine but, I haven't had any trouble out of my tranny and I've put over 134000 abusive miles on it. Just now getting around to putting a new clutch in that I believe had an early death due to the mods.

I'm going to have to agree with you that you just have really shitty luck.:D

I think weld was his locktite...
My point being that locktite and proper torque would have prevent the first time it was rebuilt...
I would agree that weld should hold better than locktite, but not quite as good as rust.

Yea yea :flipoff2:

If you had to weld something I think it would have been beter to torq the nut then weld it.

Have you flushed your trans cooler and checked the flow? The most common reason for new or rebuilt transmissions to fail is impropper flow in the cooler causing heat.

IDK, i went with the weld to hold her together best I thought, but idk whats wrong with it till i get a chance to pull it apart, was gonna do it tonight but ended up spending most of the evening getting the ball rolling on the 4x4cross stuff, I'll see if i cant start tearing it apart within the next couple days.

on the Z71 tranny i did flush it when i put the new one in, haven't had it apart since, but i mean the fluid is burnt and there clutch material floating around that wasn't there b4 so I'm assuming its about shot

hey ricky if you rebuild your z71 trans install a spin on trans filter next time. it will catch any of the stuff that flushing will not.

Well got it apart again and 5th gear and countershaft gear are chewed up again, that means the trannys gotta come out and i gotta get new gears new mainshaft and have it all redone.

Found out what the problem was thou, apparantly the previous owner had had the tranny apart before to fix the 5th gear problem, well idoit put 5th gear on backwards, which is why it failed the first time, then when i went to put the new gear on having never had an nv4500 apart before I put the gear on the way it came off . . . backward, thus leading to it failing 5 days later.

But yea unfortunaly i welded it on backwards, so now im really screwed, best part is my college loan payments kick in next month and the very small amount of excess $$ i had per month will be gone.

Thank God I have the Z71 to drive because otherwise id be really screwed cause it might be a while before the dodge gets fixed unless i can come up with some $$ somehow. Lets just hope the Z71 keeps rolling along.

As usual I am :handed:

I think its time for you to liquidate ricky. Sell all those piles you have and buy a reliable CAR that will get you to and from work. That way you wont be so screwed with vehicles all the time dumping all of your money into something that breaks every week and costs you $$$$$$$ in fuel every time you fill up.

Not what you want to hear...but we've had this conversation before.

Agreed. See...you should have left it stock. :flipoff2:

On another note, I just loaded that newest quad tune the other day and am able to actually drive my truck on something other than "1" again. Have you got rid of your shuddering yet?

Well, the reason i bought the dodge was to be the reliable, decent gas milage DD, I just got screwed by the previous owner on the 5th gear situation.

I need to update it, the truck has been broken so long I haven't had a chance to mess with the quad but I def want to get that custom tuning so I can get it to fuel more aggressively down low.

But I gotta fix it again thou before i mess with the quad again :handed:

You're contradicting yourself here. If you really want a reliable decent mpg DD then sell the quad to fund tranny parts and leave the truck in stock tune.

That or buy a $500 honda off craigslist and pull all your other abominations off the road until you find a job making more money.

Powerful, Reliable, Cheap

Pick any two.

Everyone on this board told you you were in for a world of hurt modifying this truck, before you even thought about buying it. You chose to ignore some people with a lot more experience than yourself, and now you're paying the price. Leave your sympathy threads at home.

x2

Fix it and leave it stock till you can afford to drive a juiced up tow rig.
