O-Ring Mod TJ (brakes)

I have an '01 TJ with a Dana 44 in the rear.
I have tried to get all the stopping power I can out of my rear drums, to little or no avail.

The TJ has a satisfactory bite on the front, but the rears just don't like to hold (new shoes, good drums). Everything has been adjusted correctly. The e-brake holds well, everything looks to be in tip-top shape.

I was looking at going to disc either through Tera's conversion or the Zj junkyard swap....

But before that, what would it hurt to either pull the O-ring completely from the proportioning valve, or say use one from a ZJ with disc or a Rubicon? ( A common mod for those with newly added disc brakes )

Faster brake wear, high heat, premature lockup, blown wheel cylinders, or all of the above?

The jeep is trailered, driven on the road occasionally, and I do not care if I have to change rear shoes every year......

Whats the deal with sending more or perhaps too much pressure to the drums?

Would an adjustable valve serve me better...?

I've thought about removing the o-ring too for my rear 8.8 discs. As I understand it, the prop. valve from a Rubi is the same part# as a regular jeep. Same thing for the ZJs. Post up if you do try the o-ring and let us know how it turns out.

Greg,
The prop valve fromt eh disk rear ZJ and the Rubi are all different prices. Whoever told you they were the same is incorrect.

JR,
I have pulled them with disks. I would bet you have already taken the stock TJ brake system way farther than it should go with the 35 or 37 Boggers. Removing the o-ring typically gives a spongy feeling to the brakes. I would swap to rear disks if you want more stopping surface and to hydroboost to get the pressure up.

If I can help with anything let me know

Andy
