ARCTIC CAT UWHARRIE OFF-ROAD JAMBOREE
Fun Event Scheduled for October 11 - 13 Will Promote
Outdoor Ethics and Teach How to Respect the Outdoors
Uwharrie, N.C., Oct. 4, 2013 – The Uwharrie Off-Road Training Center, Kevin Powell Motor Sports, the USDA Forest Service-Uwharrie Ranger District, NC4x4 and TREAD Lightly! are holding the second annual Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Jamboree October 11-13 at 4026 N.C. Highway 109 North in Uwharrie, N.C., across the street from the Eldorado Outpost.
The goal for the weekend is to bring off-road users together to help in recruiting volunteers and to raise awareness of the mission of TREAD Lightly! to protect and enhance recreation access and opportunities by promoting outdoor ethics to heighten everyone’s sense of good stewardship. The goal is to balance the needs of the people who enjoy outdoor recreation with the need to maintain healthy ecosystems and thriving populations of fish and wildlife so that the Uwharrie National Forest Off-Highway Vehicle Trail System can develop and be maintained.
The Jamboree starts Friday at 12 p.m. and ends Sunday at 4 p.m. and will be a fun filled, family friendly weekend. It focuses on people who love off-road vehicles - Jeeps, 4-wheel drives, dirt bikes, all-terrain vehicles and recreational off-highway vehicles.
This year’s events include allowing attendees to test drive and ride smaller off-road vehicles on the off-road test track, ‘Quick 4-Wheel Drive Coaching’ on the Uwharrie Off-Road Training Center (UORTC) easy obstacle course, a Sasquatch Shuffle, corn hole contests, and 4x4 games such as Balance Beam, Roll to the Line, Ball and Post, Blind Dog Run, Nudge the Jug and Spear the Ring (see accompanying release for 4x4 game descriptions). There is a $30 cost per team to enter with $10 going to benefit the Friends of Uwharrie, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote, develop, and maintain outdoor recreation opportunities in the greater Uwharrie National Forest area in an environmentally sound manner.
“The Uwharrie Off-Road Training Center’s 4x4 games are definitely a unique experience and a lot of fun for the family,” says Scott Fields, Jamboree Organizer. “There will be prizes and trophies given out to the winning teams. Whether you are participating or cheering on your favorite team, I guarantee everyone will have a great time.”
There will also be a 4-Wheel Drive Show and Shine with four classes participating: Mall Crawler, Trail Class, Vintage and Racing. Surprise awards may also be given. Three trophies will be awarded per class. There is a $10 entry fee. The winners will be voted on by donations with proceeds also going to the Friends of Uwharrie organization.
On Friday night, the movie “Tugger” will be shown, with hot dogs to be enjoyed by the kids. BBQ will be served all day Saturday from Texalina BBQ, a unique style of BBQ that blends the smokey rich flavors of Texas Style BBQ with the delicate tender slow cooked BBQ found in the Carolinas. Sandwiches will run from $6-$8 with a kid’s portion for $3.
Live music can be heard all day Saturday with sounds ranging from Christian Rock to 70’s, 80’s and 90’s rock. The Cedar Plantation out of Troy, N.C. is sponsoring three Christian bands, BloodWater from Greensboro, N.C.; Broken Yesterday from Darlington, S.C. and Reckless Mercy from Savannah, Ga. Also joining the stage line up are Lemon Jack out of Greensboro and Winston-Salem that specialize in covering rock music from the 70’s to 90’s; ending the night will be the 2013 Winner of the Charlotte Music Awards in the rock category, The Michael Tracy Band.
Rounding off the weekend will be 4WarD Fellowship on Sunday morning featuring biscuits, praise music and a worship service starting at 8:30 a.m.
Admission is free on Friday and Sunday and will be $1 for Saturday, October 12 only. Children 12 and under are free. The gates open at 9 a.m. and all parking will be located on the property of the Uwharrie Off-Road Training Center. Since this is a family event, alcohol is prohibited.
