OEM Tire Horse Sh*t

Last year we bought a new Camry. The front tires were wearing unevenly (outer edges wearing much faster than inside edges). So Toyota aligned the car, rotated the tires at 8k miles. The tires that were rotated to the front were like new (they were on the rear of a Front wheel drive car). Now at 14k they're not wearing evenly - outer edges still wearing out faster, just not as bad. The outside of the tire is almost slick!! They're saying it not out of alignment..I talked to Toyota and the Toyota dealer about a partial credit on a new set of tires, and they don't give a sh*t. Dealer says "Best you can hope for on the factory tires is 25k, and that's the way they wear". They said I have an issue with Bridgestone. I called them up, apparently they don't give mileage ratings for OEM tires - they are built to Toyota's specifiations which apparently isn't worth a sh*t.

So what I have learned today is Toyota and Bridgestone have came together to put a very low quality tire.

Is it possible for the tires to still wear unevenly, even though (according to the dealer) it's aligned properly? I'll try to post a pic later.

I'd take it to a tire place, and get a computer print out of the alignment. ANy of the big name tire places should be able to do this. Then, if it is out of spec, get the dealer to pay a pro-rated amount for tires. There is no reason a new car should have uneven tire wear, at 8 or 14k miles.

Is it just the outside edge of the tire, or the the outer edge of both sides of the tire? Just one side is a alignment issue, both outer edges of the tire is a pressure issue.

FYI, the Bridgestone Turanza EL400-2 that comes on the Camry as OEM is a VERY soft tire, and wears out quickly, I've read that some folks barely got 13k out of them.

I too have a new body '07 Camry SE ( 215/55-17) , we bought it with 16k on the clock and it had brand new Michelins on it when we got it ( OEM was the B'stone Turanza Serenity) . So far so good, 36k on the car now, tires rotated twice, and they seem to be wearing well.

Go read reviews on Tirerack.com about the tires, you'll find some Hondas are havign the same issue, for the same reasons.

I've gotta ask, have you ever ridden with your better half as she drives ? maybe she's sporting thru the corners and maybe doesn't realize she's hot rodding it ?

My wife loves the car, it's fairly quick, and she's a little tough on the skinny pedal, she'll average about 375mile to a tank ( 26mpg) while I can drive it and get 400+ miles @ 29ish MPG. Hell I got a speeding ticket in ours, I don't drive it often and I wasn't paying attention while accelerating one morning, got bit at 74 in a 55.

Also, what air pressue are you running ? I try to keep mine at 32ish ( TPMS trips at 27 I beleive)

I keep the air @32 in the front and @29 in the rear per the sticker on the door. I check it every 2 month or so to avoid the TPMS light. It has never been on, and has never been more than 2 psi out of spec.

I found out today that the Bridgestone Turanza you get OEM and what you buy at a tire dealer are different. They are soft like you said, and others have said similar. We have everything documented and I'm getting new tires soon. If they wear uneven Toyota will fix it or get it back. I will see to it. It just pisses me off, I spend 20K plus on a new car, thinking everything is new, under warranty. I shouldn't have to worry about anything for a while. I was expecting around 40k or so on the tires, which I would have been OK with. I'm looking at getting a $600+ set of tires @ under 20k..... She doesn't hod rod it, she gets between 25 and 27 mpg. She commutes all city miles.

The outer edge is wearing faster than the inner edge. To me its out of alignment. Like said, I'm getting new tires and we'll see if it's the tires or not.

I found out OEM tires are given no mileage ratings (NO MILEAGE WARRANTY), so some of them are JUNK..... I also learned that each car manufacturer has to buy x amount of tires from everybody. You may get OEM Michelen, BF Goodrich, Firestone, ect,

The dealer and Toyota do not want to give me any type of credit towards new tires. I'm still fuming on this one..... I spent a chunk on a new car with sh*t tires......

Yeah, the folks in the service department at the Toyota dealer your dealing with haven't seen the ball since kick-off. I don't want to get started on the problems I've had with them. I don't know the deal with the Camery tires, but the factory Bridgestones on my 07 4-runner have held up quite well. I have found the drive to N. Wilksboro for my new Toyota sales and service needs to be well worth the while.

Most recently, Took my Toyota 95 pick-up in for oil change, they overfilled it. I took it back, they bought it out corrected, checked again about 1/2 quart low. I made them top it off. Come back next oil change, told what happened last time, they noted the situation on my work order not to overfill, I also needed an inspection. The truck is a 95 and registered in Davidson County, so I only need a safety inspection. About an hour later, the truck is ready, and their charging me for the complete $31 emission inspection. I tell them thats not right, ask for manager, he tells me the law had changed and I had to have the emission inspection on the 95 truck. I left pissed as hell not thinking about the oil, got home and checked, overfilled. I still have the receipt were I was overcharged on the inspection.

I will tell you that all OEMs get a different compund than you get retail.
There are 2 schools of thought, you will never get a truck tire to last as long as some of the Ford OEM tires, because they have a corporate stance that if tires last a long time the consumer equates that with a well built vehicle.

Many of the "foreign" car manufacturers choose a softer compound because #1 it gripss better and makes thee car feel more sporty on a test drive #2 its softer and has a better ride and #3 Its cheaper...yep the dirty secret, tire manufacturers cut them a deal because surprise you will need tires quicker.

I'm dealing with Modern in Winston Salem. Please tell me about your problems, I'm all ears and interested.

lol..your dealing with the same people that forgot to put the oil plug back in after one of their customers FIRST oil changes!!!!

3000 miles on the truck and the engine went out because of a techs poor service work!

Get a second opinion

I guess it must depend on the manufacture and vehicle. I had a 06 jeep rubicon and it needed new tires in 12,000 miles and they were rotated at every oil change. They told me that all jeeps do that so I went to the owner of the dealership and I got they to replace them for free. But then I had a 07 fj and I traded it in with 18000 miles and the tires still had alot of tread but it did have they upgraded tire package. I now 09 nissan and it has 13000 miles and tires look great.

Also my roomate had a suszuki car and it needed new tires in like 14000 miles.

I believe ALL OEM tires suck. My wifes 07 X unlimited only got 16800 til they were wore slam out. So on went the 31 BFGs

dang. those tires wear out fast! The OEM tires on our old Liberty lasted for 66K miles and still had some life on them when we pulled them off.

my Legacy had 60k on the OEMs when I finally took them off.

I had an experience with Firestone tires on a new '03 Civic we bought a few years back. My wife hit a pothole with 5k on the odometer and up came a bubble on the sidewall. We bought the car a Hendrick Honda in Charlotte, and got the run-around from them, having been told to call Firestone, then got the run around from Firestone, which told us to contact the dealer.

I made several calls to both the dealer and Firestone, and finally spoke to the general manager at Hendrick. After explaining the situation to him, that they were selling cars with NO mileage or road hazard warranties on their brand new cars, and how unsatisfied with it I was, he replaced my tire.

So, long story short, +1 for hendrick Honda. But I'll NEVER run a Firestone tire again. That was my 2nd bad experience with them.

damn thats crazy, i hate it for you man, having to replace tires on a new car is stupid.

on another not, Ive got BFG a/t's on my 94 4Runner and they have over 60k on them, and still have 25% tread left.

There is no way to do an emissions inspection on a 1995. 1995 and older are OBD1 and have a different diagnostic connector than the 1996+ OBD2 vehicles. They look the same at first but they aren't. You will never need an emissions inspection on a 1995. If you're really not happy with them, give the DMV a call and let them know what's going on and you have a receipt to prove it. One person if not more will get in trouble with the DMV. If you need a number PM me and I'll get one for you tomorrow.

According to my uncle (40+ years as GM dealership OWNER) OEM shocks & brakepads are exactly the same as tires, made to ride/stop like a Caddy... for 15k-20k miles.

If you need to get some tires, I'll highly recommend Tom @ Boonville Tire. A bit out of the way, but his pricing talks & he's NO BS guy that will take care of you. He's done multiple sets for me & multiple for Brent.

My wifes honda came with michelin tires annd we got 115K miles out of them. They were rotated every 6000 miles. Thats the most I have ever got out of a set of tires.
