off road expedition camper

There are popups that are designed to be "expo" campers so it all depends on what type you're thinking. If you take your 1980 Coleman on a trail with no mods it probably won't hold up very well...

I just got a 78 model coleman pop up camper all 4 cables r broke I got it off of a buddy of mine traded a brush guard for it canvas is still in good shape

Ha, my statement wasn't far off. Expedition Portal has some threads on offroad modifications, but dig around and do some homework. I'm sure there are some frame modifications/stiffening you could do. Swap springs or do spring over to lift it and get some decent tires under it. Swap to a brake axle that has the same bolt pattern as your planned tow rig if if doesn't already have brakes.

Do you want to pull this with your 4wheeling vehicle to a place and set it up outside of the park, or tow it along threw the trails, or do you trailer your rig and want to have it on your trailer as well?

How about this

I that even if you solve the ground clearance issues and hitch articulation issues you are going to run into a width issue. Most trails around here are through the woods. You'll probably be pushing close 89" wide where as a cherokee is only 68" wide.

What type of trails do you go on?

That Coleman pop up is gonna be HUGE on the trail... Or most that I have been on. If it was me I'd want something that wasn't wider than my tow vehicle. I've seen several articles or post where people have used a small 4x8 trailer to make a camper. What's the width on the pop up?

Perfect trail size and doesn't cost a fortune like the purpose built trailers. The box is narrow with the wheels completely outside the box, making it easier to fit real tires. I still haven't gotten around to the lift and tires but I have all the parts.

I know you want to work with what you have, but consider other options before you spend a bunch of time and money.

I go on trails like richland rd in blowing rock

Why not take the pop up and drop it on one of those military trailers. Pintle hitch solves the articulation problems. Also ground clearance won't be an issue. If the camper road high, the difference could be storage.

Not sure what military trailer I have but its the big mf'er and I use it primarily to haul firewood out of the woods. It tracks very well, for the most part will fit where I can.

I have no doubt that platform would be fine behind your rig.

As sketchy as richland road is I doubt I'd be camping up there. I suppose my point is. There aren't any trials like on the west coast where some thing like this would be useful.

Fix it up and use it. Plenty of great camping areas near good off road parks.
