off road recovery company

I watched an interview where he said that they were pulling the plug on a large number of reality shows. I watch Smithsonian, discovery is just too off the map.

A few of us have always talked about buying the old Exxon station down the road from the outpost and making that a repair shop. Obviously have some kind of trail tow truck with on-board welder/air and have a flatbed on standby. Could be a very lucrative business for someone who already lives down that way, but I dont see me quitting my job and moving to Troy anytime soon...

I bet the fees/permits/rules/etc to work for hire on USFS land would be prohibitive. That, and I really doubt we'll see Uwharrie still open 5 years from now.

I highly doubt there is any insurance, probably just some 'good ol boy' helpin folks out.Thats been around for a while because Ive seen it before somewhere else.Watch the one where the frame on the wrecker breaks in half.

I was kind of wondering about this.
But, Terry was able to run his hot dog stand. So it's certainly possible.
And technically its all FS land, including the roads in/out of the trails, and there have been tows there many times.

But I have a hard time believing it'd be enough service to support a shop/career, at least the recovery part. It's gotta be a pretty dire situation before many of the cheapskates out there will call in for help, and they've been getting by thus far for years...

I bought a truck off of a friend that his thoughts in building it was to build a off road wrecker to pull the idiots around here out

seems like maybe a good idea for a club initiative. rent a lot or somewhere to store the tow rig(s) i suppose it still requires someone to be local to operate it.

I'd thought about that, but with a Duece. A simple tow bar and a good 12k winch would do wonders, but like said above people would rather cheap out and limp it back than to pay someone to pull them out

There is (or was) a company in Harlan that all they did was recover broke rigs of the Black Mountain area...they also ran a regular repair shop, but the only thing they towed were off mountain break downs.

Think I remember something about draging them down to Evarts and then a "real" roll back picking them up there only because the "tow out rig" couldnt be tagged

Probably pic worthy next time I see it, and might even be a member??? But there's a local guy here in Durham who fitted a M939 military truck with a boom with hydraulic connections. Painted white. Truly a very capable / useful rig! I've seen him using it to help pull cable and saw him fit it with about a 2' dia. auger and who knows what all else it does. He's most likely entirely self employed by it with all the local utility and construction jobs due to Durham swampland. I see him on almost every big job. Saw it the other day working on the new 147 / I-85 connector that just started up. Dude is a tall lanky fellow, guessing 6'-6 or better. Drives with 1 long leg stuck out of the open cab (doors pulled) with an old school shiny steel 180 degree brimmed hard hat with pure (go get em) attitude. Entirely makes my day to see him come around a corner heading to a site! :driver:

I am building a 4x wrecker boom rig only to be used at my shop. Got put on the backburner though due to other (more prosperous) work that picked up. My shop work is pretty much shut down November thru March until I get it built. But the benefit has this project still remaining high on my list.

There is a cool 4x4 tow truck in Havelock that tends to get a lot of business due to the surrounding mud in the forests. I'd think there would be a good market for at least on for each major OHV area

@rockcity which one are you talking about? The old A&M Ford?
