So I've been hanging out on this site for a while and have said I'll make a build thread for over a year but life. So a little back story of the jeep, I picked up a Cherokee about 7 years ago and did most of the work with in the first year during college. Went with a 4.5 in rough country lift (wish I would have saved up something better). Then I made the mission that all dumb kids make and went light bar over lockers. and got some dirt bound off-road bumpers, a light bar, and winch. then started to take it out to some local private land, and Uhwarrie A few times. had a blast and this started my theoretical plans to make it even better, but at the time I was working on my masters and was saving for a wedding. At this time the jeep radiator blew and was having trouble starting every morning, so at this time my future wife and I who where a 3 hour drive apart decided to take the jeep off the road and store it on her family's farm and I got a commuter car. Well we got married and I moved up to the rdu area with her since she had a great job here and the jeep sat I did make a fun trail around the farm to drive when we went there. Then after about 1.5 years of sitting we got a little garage add on to our apartment so I could have place to work on the jeep and store all my tools. then a year later we moved again out to apex to a home with a two car garage that has been amazing, but still the jeep was not a priority just something I could drive never so often and time to go wheeling was a no go. Well then things changed when my brother need a car and I was so ready to just drive the jeep since my commute was only a few miles. sold the car and got the jeep to be as reliable as I can with plans to really starting to get back at working at it. Then the best thing to halt my plans happened my wife was pregnant, so I had other task to get done instead of jeep things. well after my baby girls birth this March, my wife is telling me to get the jeep baby safe but also to get some of the projects done that I've been meaning to do done. First thing that needed to get done was tires since my old ones where bald.

Sorry for the long intro, but my next project I am going to need some help. Since my jeep is older it docent have the little car seat hooks built in that our car seat uses to hook up. well I want to get a welder soon but, its looking like that will have to wait a little bit. I wanted to try an make a set of hooks and weld them in figured it couldn't be too hard to do. So if anyone might be willing to lend a hand it would be greatly appreciated.

Use the seat belt. Do not weld your own hooks on. The seatbelt is a stronger method anyway.

That was the plan but the belt is to big for the base where it won’t get tight enough before the stopper. My thought was that if it was a solid anchor point I wouldn’t have the slack and it makes swapping the base between cars much simpler.

We've never had a problem getting the slack out, you just have to put all your weight in the seat to tighten it down.

Edit: we have two late 90s TJs where the seatbelt is the only option. We also have three kids in car seats and not every seating position in our newer vehicles have the LATCH hooks. Those hooks are only made to hold a certain weight, as well, which includes the weight of the seat. FYI

X2 we had a Cherokee that was our main vehicle when the kids were small and had no issues. My wife and the kids were rear ended while they were sitting still and had no injuries , sadly the Cherokee was totaled but it did its job .

If you are unsure of how to properly secure a child seat swing by your local fire department. I think most of them with full time staff will have someone trained to install the seats, and will be happy to help you out.

I think it was the TJ that had a plastic nubbin on the seatbelt that got in the way of the child seat connections. Its only actual purpose is to keep the seat belt buckle from falling to the bottom of the strap when it wasn't in use. I took a pair of end nippers to it, and it wasn't a problem anymore.

Thank you this was my problem I will get rid of the plastic thing and just be done with it.

Is your car seat a base with detachable seat?

If so, use the seat belt, its how its designed. Some ahve a secondary strap, but its just a seat belt to hook to those hooks. What I did, under supervision of a trained Firefighter, was to hook it up loose, pull the slack out and then put all my weight on it (265ish at that time) and pull the slack again. more than 1 inch of play is an issue, what I was told. I had very little play from pushing down so much, but there is going to be some from the softness of the seat and stretch in the belt. maybe 1/8-1/4 inch play.

Firehouses, police stations, and EMS stations I believe will all help and make sure its safe.

In bigger seats where its not a base/seat style, its harder because they are bigger, but its still not hard overall. I do them the same way, just check them every so often.

Update the Jeep has been doing great took it for a quick weekend trip to Uwharrie to see how it would do as it was and it killed it

It was a great weekend to get out. Since then nothing to report just used it as my daily. But then as all Jeep’s when you think it’s all good it’s not. So starting last week I started to get death wobble on the way to work. This was an issue back before and young dum me had a shop fix it and they used washers and welded them to stop the hole from wollowing out, but never did the back and well......

The back hole on the track bar mount is oval. Now here is my question. Put the bolt back in and just try to make it till I can get a welder and try to make my own or pre made ones? Or try and drill a new hole but I don’t think there will be enough metal to the right that the bolt may sheer thou the mount then I’m out of the Jeep for a long time. My daily drive is under 10 mins all back roads but every morning it has got me.

I'd totally weld a thick washer on the other side too. Doesn't look like they got very much weld on that front one though.

More than likely, all this happened from the bolt being slightly loose OR the bracket not having a good bite/clamp on the panhard bar. Long story short, it's able to move around in the bracket and waller it out.

I would love to do this and be done with it. A welders not in the cards right now with Christmas coming and it being our girls first one. If anyone in the Apex, Rdu area would like to help I would be greatly appreciated. Also will bring beer and probably cookies my wife is on a Christmas baking spree.

I was going to say, I'd totally help out, I'm just a little far away.

You could always post in the general chit chat and see if someone close to you would be willing to help. I would help but I'm near Charlotte.

Jeep TJ, LJ, MJ, XJ, and ZJ Front Axle Track Bar Bracket

That may be one of your best options if you're going to be welding something in anyways.

I think it would be difficult to get a washer behind the rear hole and weld it well/have enough room for the nut. I also don't think you could put the washer on the inside because of the width of the track bar/bushing. I'd help, but I'm in Charlotte.

You also might want to consider going to an over axel track bar. Then it will give you an excuse to get upgraded cross over steering. Depending on what your long term plan is.

This is a good idea both off you. I will try and jerry rig it to get my by and order that and when I comes I'll post something up in the general chat to see if I can get a hand with it. Thanks

The plan right now is to keep it pretty close to where it is now sine it is my daily driver. Then I would want to look into real taring it down and upgrading it when I have another vehicle to get back and forth to work.

So the keep is band-Aided up I ended up using a washer and a lock washer on the back side but since I don’t have a flag nut and the 17mm didn’t fit so opened up this old 15 I had.

Now just need to wait till Christmas calms down then order all this and fix it for good.
