ohhhhh, how I hate BMW sometimes

I feel your pain! I have an M3 - $165.00 for an oil change hurt the purse. I was really confused when the tech told us that BMW recommends changing the oil approx. every 20,000 miles but he personally recommends every 5,000 miles.

97 M3 and I change it every 3-4k. DIY in about 30 minutes and Ive never spent over $85 even when running Redline Full Syn. If you get tired of dealing with Performance, Ive got a guy in the parts department at Hendrick in Charlotte.

Do it every 5k if you want to keep the engine in good shape long past 150k miles. I've owned 3 M3's (88,95,98 conv.) I work on several more. The ones that went 10-20k on oil changes the inside of the motor looked like shit at 75-100k miles. I work on a 96 that has 280k on it last time I saw it, oil has been changed every 5k, motor still looks new inside. Don't buy the 10-20k oil change hype, it helps BMWs overall service cost look much lower on paper. I charge right at $100 for a synthetic oil service (rotate tires, full check of systems, etc...) not just sucking the oil out, putting back in and kicking it out the door.

Wow, thanks for the advice, I'll definately change it before the 20k mark now! My car currently has approx. 75k miles on it - the only reason we took it to the dealer was because we had trouble finding the oil (I think it uses 10w60 but can't remember off hand) & I wanted it changed before our trip to NY. I'll probably have the hubby change it next time as long as we can get the oil!
