Hey guys I am building a 1987 K5 blazer with a mildly built 355 sbc, (501 lift hdy flat tapped cam, roller rockers, forged pistons, balanced rotating assembly, High volume oil pump). The blazer will be seeing dirt roads, rocks, and high rpms in deep mud. I am wondering if the stock 5qt pan will hold enough oil to feed that pump at angles or do I need an aftermarket pan? And if I do need an aftermarket pan what is working for all the other gen 1 sbc guys out there? Thanks for any and all help. I just don't want to trash a new engine over a $100 part. Thanks again guys.

I run a stock pan. Why it stays together is anyone's guess.:shaking:

But...I have seen guys using 7 quart racing pans with the baffles for the added security and not have any issues. The additional oil helps cool it and the baffles keep some oil around the pick-up longer

I switched to a deeper pan on the small block in my suburban because I would lose oil pressure on steep inclines more often going down than going up. At least I wasn't on the throttle going down hill. Go with a 7 quart.

My 4.0 starves on really steep driveways if it's a half quart low (45-60* slope, I live in the foothills and people put houses in ridiculous places)

Like baffles?

Yes. Baffles, pan runners, trap doors, all good things to have for proper oil control. If you're just having intermittent oil supply problems, something like an Accusump can help a lot too. An Accusump isn't going to help when you're spending a lot of time tilted or something that that though, because its capacity is limited and therrfore can't be a crutch for sustained problems with oil supply or control.

Fwiw,

That 7 quart is a cheaper one from Summit, has a large trap door and baffles over the sump area.

If you get a circle track pan, make sure you will still have room for the front driveshaft.

Thanks guys I am going to go with a 7qt pan, Now I just have to figure out which one will not hit the front drive shaft.

What kind of front axle do you have and any lift?

I'll send a picture of a 60 with 4" of lift when I get to the shop today
