So I just bought a 2000 XJ with the 4.0 a couple days ago and ive noticed that the oil pressure at idle stays at about 10-15psi. When Im driving the psi raise to between 25-40 depending on what kind of driving im doing or how hard im accelerating. Ive done some homework on the interweb but ive seen lots of mixed reviews about safe operating pressures. Im wondering if this is normal for the newer 4.0's or if Im on the verge of having some serious problems? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

How many miles? Before you go down the road of oil pump replacement/re-ring, check the cheap plastic oil pressure sending unit for cracks/leaks. That was the issue with my TJ's erratic oil pressure.

Its now got 153,xxx. What exactly does the sending unit do? Expensive to replace? Any speical tools needed?

It sends your oil pressure level to your gauge.

Right now, mine is out, so I have 0 pressure and a check gauges light. My last jeep (TJ) had one that read 80 psi all the time, so it was also out

Its most likely the oil pressure sending unit. They are sort of a pain to install. I used a pair of vice grips to install mine.

They run like 35 from rockauto.com. Dont go with the Stealer on this, mine cost me 60 from them :shaking:

minimum oil pressure at idle is spec'd at 11 psi and minimum of 37psi at 1600 rpm. if it is running that spontanious (25-40) then id definitely change the sending unit first. i got mine from the dealer for 35 bucks. advance auto should have a sending unit for your jeep. if you decide to go to rock auto then double check the company tha makes them. if you purchase from advanceautoparts.com and put in one of their promo codes that should save u some bucks. using the code "ccabin" you will save 10 bucks after spending 30. hope this helps

oil pressure sensor

that thing is on the side of the oil filter base and i have seen a crowd of them damaged while removing the oil filter so replacement of the sensor would be the most logical and economical first step. Good Luck!!

I had to replace the one on my 99 XJ, get the metal replacement sending unit not the cheap plastic one. Be careful of the plastic electric connector/clip when changing the old one they can be brittle and break. Should be an easy fix.

x3 on the oil sender we see a ton of those, also do any of the other gauges act up ??? we had some we had to replace the connector on the back of the cluster due to eratic gauge movement. My 04 TJ usely moves around between idle and road speed.
