What kind of oil should be used for break in as far as weight and what would you run afterward? What brand, weight and conventional or synthetic?

I've heard breakin conventional for 1k then change oil due to machining/breaking residues and 3k there after.. synthetic or conventional.. no difference in my book, but what motor are we talking about here? a 1948 farmall motor or a 2015 zehuwanazuma?

What kind of engine? I always like to use some sort of ZDDP additive and conventional Valvoline or Castrol. The Valvoline VR1 is really good as far as break in due to higher ZDDP levels but on comes in 20w-50 so not really something I'd use in the winter.

Run the cheapest 10w30 for the first 500 miles. Change the oil and filter. Then run whatever you want. I run Castrol 10w30 with 1/2 quart of Lucas oil stabilizer. Rotella or Delo are good choices also. Those are oils are for diesels and are made for longer run times/harder duty. They also have more zinc than oils made for gas engines.

I'd suggest getting actual "Break In Oil" most oil on the shelf today has had the zinc and a few other trace elements removed, these metals are what allow proper break in and wear on initial run in.

Use a good break in lube on the cam lobes especially, and run the engine for 20-25 min @2000rpm after initial start up ( remove T-stat to prevent temp over shoot )

I've made this mistake on not using the proper break in oil and procedure, cost me a cam and set of rockers ( On a 22R/RE )
