I am replacing the power steering gear box in my 78 CJ-7, as you can see in the pic, it is leaking really bad

another problem in the pic is the waggy pitman arm is hitting the tierod, I used the waggy arm so it could be tapered for the GM 1 ton tre, the stock CJ arm is not as beefey, and I thought tapering it would make for a weak area in the steering

I am getting ready to buy a new gear box, an HD mount

I would like to get a J20 box, and a mount to move the box forward about an inch, and from what I understand I will have to use a CJ manual steering shaft for the J20 box, which leaves another problem with the steering shaft being to short

I guess my questions are

what mount would you buy?

what steering gear box would you buy?

and what steering shaft will match the box you recommend

a little info about my Jeep: dana 60's front and rear, SOA, hummer hy-steer arms, tierod moved up, 36 inch tires for now

here is the pic

I would get the high steer arms from KC4X4 on this board, and run the tie rod over the pinion.
Steering rods aren't too big a deal. I little cut here, and a splice there and you'll be fine. It really isn't that big of a deal.

Get the j10 box and I think the stock cj steering shaft will extend out enough. Also I would get a chevy astro pitman arm. It's beefy and completely flat. I used one and drilled it out for a big chevy TRE.

I already have high steer arms, made for the hummer rims, and the tierod is over the pinion in the front

I have seen some double arms that move the tierod up and behind the pinion, but not looking to buy new high steer arms

thinking about moving the steering box forward about an inch

If I had the money, I would say to hell with it and buy a hydraulic assist kit, but I dont

I just used a slightly shorter pitman on mine when I had the same problem with the Waggy arm..

Wish I could tell ya.. I just went to the local junkyard, and he had a pile of steering boxes with pitmans. I'm not using it anymore, so if you're interested, PM me.. (It's not flat like the waggy, so I had it reamed top-down, and it puts the DLE about where the end of your pitman is.)

Josh, give me a call if you need some help on it.

I think an Astro arm will fit. You may be able to find one at a local yard. Also, one of the HD mounts I have heard of moves the box forward about 3/4" to help with a shackle reversal, maybe it would help yours?

Although, I have to ask. What good is being able to steer it when there is no way we can PUSH it fast enough to try out the new cage you are finishing?:flipoff2::rolleyes:

The Astro arm is the way to go for a cheap solution! I got mine for $10.

yeah I am not far from being able to drive the thing, hopefully

steering makes all the difference in the world, now I wont have to kick the tires to get the Jeep to turn one way or the other:flipoff2:

AFAIK, you still need something to propel it, don't you?

Cage is looking good though. I got mine done and the hard top on, with a few minor "adjustments".
