Our 2.5 y/o 55# mixed mutt always stood up on the fence, but last week figured out how to climb it! :shaking: She's a licker, but due to tards with "meateatting" breeds, needs to stay inside! Her favorite spot (at the double drive-thru gate) can be blocked for now with the large rolling City garbage can, but pretty sure she'll eventually move to another spot.

What are my options to insure she stays inside the fence? There is NO budget for "Invisible Fence" or replacing the existing fence! Hoping to stay away from chains/runner/etc. ??

Would a single strand of wire (& accompanying cow charger) across the top, where she has to climb over, keep her in? Or will she take the "pain over gain" in the long run?

It sure will Dave, had to do that with my dogs when I was growing up. Get you some CPVC pipe, cut in sections about a foot taller than the fence. Drill some holes in it and run a single strand of wire thru the top. Said Mutt will climb up, shock nose and back off, if not fall off.
It will work

Cool! I knew it would work initially, but wasn't sure if she'd eventually just brave the shock to climb over.

Wonder if there are insulators made especially to run a single along the top rail?... might also work for the @#$%! squirrels! They're *CHEWING* the AL tie-wires that hold the chainlink to the posts in two!:shaking:

I just drill/tapped holes in the posts and Plasticoat'ed some machine eyes. Just for added safety I put about 3" of shrink tube at each eye, 1.5" either side. Worked greatto keep our dogs in and it can't get pulled off easily if they choose to test it often.

YES it'll work, it might take a time or 3 to get bit good, but it will stop them.

My Husky Shepard mix did this as well, I had a piece of chicken wire that I would move from spot to spot as he figured out where he could jump. that got real old after about 3 days.

My fence is chain link, I bought the chain link insulator stand offs and insulators and a small ( 1/4 mile ) cattle box, put it up then let him loose. one lap of the yard, a look back at me and SEE YA !!, and yelped his ass off as he ran up the outside of the fence.

Once I caught him, put him back in the yard, he walked the fence and found the wire, several times, with his nose.

The fence hasn't been charged since late Feb of this year, he will not even come near the fence if you reach over the top.

The funny part, one side of the gate to the house ( about 25ft ) was NEVER even hooked to the rest of the system. but the wire was there, he never has figured it out. and we're good with that !!

BTW, sink the ground rod as deep as you can, the deeper the ground, the better they get zapped.

Oh, and make a habit of telling your friends, cuz they will get bit by it too, especially the drunk ones..... ( this was the most fun )

Also Dave, at the gate, you can run a jumper wire from one side to the other, connect with alligator clips(insulated or course and just disconnect it when you need to go through.
We put ours about a foot above the fence

OK, I've had it with chasing her arse down through the @#$%! neighborhood!
Apparently, my "personal banker" has also & says this project is a go... ASAP!

Couple questions for those in the know:
  1. While I don't want to spend a mint, I want a fence charger that will "make up her mind" the first time, NEVER to climb it again! Not looking for bug zapper consequences... just want to "fix" the issue once & for all! If it matters, I only have about 300' of fence-line to cover
  2. The center posts of the chain link have those crappy rounded covers and don't think they'll stay in place well enough to mount insulators to and remain rigid once the wires under a little tension. Thinking about the insulators like Brent posted, but not sure they'll be rigid enough clipped to the chainlink fencing? How far apart to space the insulators?

"Project Penitentiary" starts at dawn on Saturday!

The insulators that mbalbritton are exactly what I have on my fence, some need to be replaced now ( 10 years later) but they did the job well.

I think I have maybe $60 tops in my set up ( in 2001 dollars )

Fence charger big enough for a 2mile run was like $25, and I bought a 1/4mile roll of wire and I think 4 packs of the fence insulators. had 2 left over.

hung it up in the shed, stood a 2x4 up against the fence to telegraph the wire across the open yard ( about 25ft ) down to the fence. ground wire running down the side of the shed to the ground rod.

My fence is not a closed loop, but works quite well on dogs and drunks and the occasional small child.....

I have always heard if a dog was digging under the fence to pile its poo where it was digging and it was stay away. Not sure it would work for climbing, But thought I would share.

Lol..what do you want him to do? hang the poo from top of the fence?

LMAO...can you see the look on his neighbors faces as he is poking a hole in the big smelly tootsie rolls and threading a string through them?

lol, i know what you were getting at...but i couldnt resist busting your balls.

I would consider doing an invisible dog fence, your looking at a $100

Run the wire in and out of the chain link about mid way up the fence. Then when the dog attempts to climb the fence the collar will go off. After a while the collar won't even be needed. This will also be a cleaner look and easier to install. Bury the wire under the gates.

Its super easy to install this way.

Thanks Mike, but that won't do anything for the neighbors idiot kids that think *MY* fence is an extension of their swingset!

A decent charger will "remind" them... even when I'm not here!

Kids are dumb, tell them its fun, convince them to put the collar on, though you might catch a charge or two lol
