Went and looked at an old house last night. the house was built in 1937. Down in the basement was a "Water System" tank and some sort of pump that I've never seen before. Wanted to see if anyone know what it is. Unfortunately I didn't think to get a picture.

Supply line comes in and T's off. Main supply going to the Water Heater and the rest of the house while the split at the T goes down to this Tank that says "Water System". Off the side of the take is a pump of some sorts that looks like a cast Iron Spinning wheel. I didn't see an outlet pipe from the take, only a supply. Really wish I had taken a picture.

Any thoughts on what it is?

Sounds like it may be a "Constant Water Pressure" system. The tank holds pressure, so you don't get hammering in your pipes when ever the well pump is off and right before it kicks on, Most modern systems just use a bladder tank, but older systems sometimes had pumps to keep the pressure up in the tank that maintains pressure.... If the house is on city water now, you could probably just disconnect the thing...

I saw a system like that once searching the net that was for pumping from a water source (city water) relaying the water above 400' in elevation. Like a mid-way point up a large hill. I have property that is right at the 400' mark.

that makes sense and sounds like a that's exactly what it could do from the looks of it. thanks.
