Old Jeep Value

So, I got a pretty shocking tax bill in the mail this week. It seems the city of Durham values my 1974 CJ5 at $12,300! Anybody dealt with this before? I paid $300 for it so it's not a $12000 jeep at all. Is there a site where I can get a reasonable value like kbb for old cars? The NADA guides show ridiculous prices for old jeeps.

I just went thru this in Lee County....value was always $500, crept up to 5000. Talked to tax office, they said only way to contest that value was to pay an appraiser to value it, which would only be good for 1 year...then I'd have to have it appraised again, and again, and again.

Soooooo.....I put antique plates on it last year. No restrictions, and state law limits property tax valuation to $500. They are an extra ten bucks, though.

I'll look into that, I've never thought about antique plates. Thanks

If there is a Carmax nearby, pretend you want to sell it and have them write an appraisal. It might be more than $500 but it will surely be less than $12,000.

I took a 96' GrandAm with 112,000mi to carmax back it 2003 and they offered me $350 I laughed at the guy.

F**k carmax

My point exactly. it sucks if you are actually trying to sell something but if you just want data to show the tax guy its perfect.

Thought I'd update the thread in case any one else goes through this:

My original tax bill based on the $12,300 value was $176.37 (yeah Durham's tax rates are ridiculous). After switching to antique plates, my tax bill was only $21.57. Allowing for the $10 plate fee, switching to antique plates saved me $144.80.

Thanks again Kaiser715! That's why I love this forum.
