Old Salem

we go there once every couple of years to do a living history program for them. You will enjoy it.The regiment we portray (26th North Carolina) had fell back to Kinston, after loosing all their gear and a quarter of the men captured ,from Newbern in March of 1862.While there a Moravian brass band came down looking for a regiment to join. These young lads were from Old Salem and stayed as members of the 26th for the duration of the war. They were rumored to be Lee's favorites.

That's interesting history there, Moravians were supposed to be pacifists! I grew up in a Moravian area in the North, would be interesting to see how many of them fought with the Union.

well they were pacifists...musicians generally weren't combatants. They used music to sooth the troops regardless which side heard them.In times of battle, they were used to help with tending the wounded and dead. Field musicians (fife and drums) were used the same way. Buglers and drummers were needed to sound out orders but after the battle, again used to tend the wounded and dead.

Sorry Brian for hijacking your thread man...go and have a great time and take lots of photos.

We aren't pacifists, we're conscientious objectors. There was a shop in Old Salem that made rifles during the Civil War that were often considered some of the finest made in the country. We often choose not to fight, but serve in other ways. Of course, that's not really part of the dogma like it used to be. There's plenty of good Moravians in the military today.

They keep talking about reopening the brewery in Old Salem, but I'm not sure if they have yet.

PM obxfisherman... he works there (IT, yes... what do you think runs the POS equipment?). Just like Jamestown & Williamsburg, I can stand for DAYS watching the blacksmiths & woodworkers :D

my wife graduated from the college. She says don't forget the campus grounds if you like traditional college grounds with beautiful landscaping. Her do not miss list includes the Bakery, Brothers House, Gods Green Acre (graveyard) and we both recomend going back at Christmas for the Candle Tea. This is the only time they show off their putz, a scale model of the whole community and a very old elaborate Manger scene housed under the Brothers House in a natural celar. The model is something like thirty or more feet long. Plus you get a speacial coffee and biscuty bagel thing to eat.

how can they be so thin and so gingerly delicious??? I have to get about $12 bucks worth of them every trip (and then hide them from my little girl!!) and they still only last about 37 minutes haha!! glad you had fun man!!!!

Gotcha, guess I misinterpreted what you were saying. Still cool history. I'm a huge history buff, particularly Civil War. I have a history degree from State and focused a lot on early American history, so that was a really cool bit if info. :)

Awesome! Moravians are known for our ability to hang onto crap for eons. Check out the Archives Building sometime if you want proof! Some call it hoarding, we call it history. ;) Either way, I'm sure we still have some of the original recipes tucked away, they'd better bring them out. I'm dying to see what the original beer of Winston-Salem tastes like!
