That thing is awesome! Especially in the context of 1926!
Less moving parts than a track. Less ground damage on dry ground. "Floats" on deep snow. Coverts back and forth to wheeled vehicle.

You just asked the same question that I have been pondering for two days.
I could see making a smaller version of that today using hydraulic motors and such. 
I'm actually contemplating on how to do such a thing on something small like a lawn tractor or go-cart. I simply want to be able to make this and then see what it would/could do. I don't see needing a full size version of it as we just don't get the snow that we used to around here.Banned User
