I have a LS1 and tranny out of a 98 car and a 05 Unlimited. Since we don't have inspections in NC now, would it be possible for me to install this engine in the newer Jeep?

We still have inspection in NC

yes

As long as the 98 ECM is OBD which it is since it's post 1996, you can reflash ecm to read your 05's VIN and model. As long as you're not throwing codes though you will pass inspection. You may need to take it to someone you know for the visual side of it though...

don't you mean OBDII? and the law itself i thought was that the motor had to be the same year or newer than the vehicle it is being installed into.

Yeah I think this might be the case. I was told if I ever wanted to install a new engine in my TJ and have it pass inspection the engine needs to be a 98 or newer.

i dont think it matters if the engine is newer or older than the vehicle... my 92 has a 87 22re and it'll pass inspection all day long

Technically it has to be of the same year or newer. But as long as it reads the correct VIN and no codes. . .

Your 92 p/u doesn't have to pass an emissions inspection, just safety. It only has to have the emissions equipment that came on the '92. With '96 and newer it gets plugged into the computer and if the vin's don't match the state comes and shits purple twinkies all over the place and will probably take your vehicle.
