i want to paint the landcruiser military style. I plan on just using a thick coat (or a lot of thin coats actually) of rattlecant flat OD green. I also plan on just painting over the current paint. good/bad idea? do i need to strip and primer it? It doesnt have to look like it rolled out of a paint shop....but, i also dont want it to look like crap.

I'm willing to primer it if i need to. i just have no experience with paint and need advice on whats the best (and still remain cheap) route to take.

who sells the military paint by the gallon,i'm planning on painting the cj khaki

and brush it on? i've seen people brush it on before. I think my dad said thats the way they did it in the marines.....25 years ago.

NAW SPRAY IT ON

I started off by spraying on mine got the first layer done, but had to leave and come back and nozzle had dried up on me and couldnt get it to work properly after that so I finsished up by rolling it on with a paint roller, I think it turned out well.

Not bad looking. thanks for the help guys. keep it coming! any one with progress pics?

I did a yota cab truck with the olive drab in a rattle can a couple of years ago. I wet sanded the entire truck then washed off the residue, let it dry taped it off, and painted it. Took about $60.00 in rattle can paint, but it looked great, and never chipped.

Scuff it and spray it. However, when I did mine (in rattlecan) I found that it would fade and burn off about every 6 months, so just be prepared to repeat this job to keep it good looking.

buy the gallon paint and use an air sprayer. Gallon paint: $20 Cheap sprayer: $40 It saves a lot of time using the sprayer with the gallon paint

So....$60.00 bucks either way. might as well buy a cheap sprayer.

damn i just checked the websites the 93redzj posted up(thanks btw),36.00 a gallon for krylon khaki, not bad, hell i can repaint it every six months for that no problem

Not trying to hijack, but has anyone tried spraying flat clear over drab or flat paint. Painted my 4Runner flat black and it chalked after about 5 months. Thinking about spraying again and putting flatner in the clearcoat. This should protect from chalk and still give the flat look.
Thanks, Richard

i would think youd have to buy some reducer also to mix with the paint....but then again reducer is fairly cheap...probably 10-20 bucks

i was thinking to cut it with cheap lacquer thinner,i buy that by the 5 gallons and it cost me like 28.00,i use it clean out my spray guns and to cut primer

eh, i dont think i'd use thinner for spraying paint. i guess you could. reducer is pretty cheap though and you dont use that much of it. in this weather i'd use higher temp or slow reducer.

My boss had a thought. Maaco has that $199 paint job.....surely they'll slap on a coat or two of flat paint for cheap. any one tried that?

If you look at military trucks, most look like crap anyway, just 27 years in the army talking. we just do whatever it takes to get them green, or tan. every time I see someone who paints their POV OD or Tan, it always looks better than the military, except maybe the Air Force, but they get all the money.

yeah, im not looking for show quality....but at the same time, i dont want the ole lady to embarrassed to ride with me!
