ok so im thinking about tradeing my 78 cj5 360v8/ t176/dana 300 combo would i be dumb to trade 4 a yj with a 4.0 6cylder auto trans or would I be better off with the yj then the cj5

I loved my CJ5 and never could stand square headlights. That said, I think a YJ is more capable out of the box than a CJ5.

But then you have to answer one question. What are you wanting to do with it?

mbalbritton I just use my cj5 as a summer ride/dd and to take some jeep trips as I run a jeep group/club

If the grill bothers you a cj clip will bolt right on.

I don't mind the grill I kinda like the square head lights thay go with the square door opening.

my ? is whats the better jeep wich one has the beter frame/ axles I no my cj5 has a dana 20 rear but have no clue what yj's have for axles or how strong thay are.

You will be giving up a v8.
You will gain an automatic.
Axles-front will be comparable, Dana 35 in the rear of the yj isn't strong.
Tub and frame will be galvanized in the yj, less prone to rust. More room inside as well.

yea uglyjeepoffroad im 6ft 3 so I would like a jeep with more leg room but yea I would miss my 360 for the power it's got and I am trying to get a jeep with a auto trans that my wife can drive some with out buying anther jeep. I did not no yjs were Galvanized.

Lot more room than a CJ5, more stable on the road, better ride, parts all over the place, frame stronger, 4.0 is super dependable, better heat/ defrost, tilt wheel. If you really get to missing all that extra V8, the 360 is a pretty easy swap down the road. I have had my share of 5's in the past and would not go back to one, unless it was free of course :D

thanks 89wrangler is their anything to look for on a yj like on cj's you got to look out for rust on the frame/ body but what do I need to look for on the yj?

Depending on where it spent its life, the usual areas, body mounts, frame, btm of windshield frame, front floors I would say. I have seen them completely rust free to where you wonder how they kept from collapsing just setting there because of rust. Won't take long to tell where it has been..

ok thanks 89wrangler. any aevice you can give me on yj's would help because I had one growing up used it around a farm to mud in bot that was 15 to 20 years ago and that was my only yj and I was 7 to 10 year old so I don't rember much on what to look for but I have been around cj's all my life had probley 5 to 6 of them so I know what to look for on cj's

stay away from, the 87-90 with carbed 4.2L (258), unless the 360 is in the near future. There's a lot of emissions crap on there, they get funky when it doesn't work right. You said auto tranny, but I'll just add that the 5spd Peugot tranny used in 87-89ish was complete junk, it also had used a different tcase (NP207 maybe). Even the early NP231s were 21spline. As mentioned above, Dana 35 was the only rear axle, D30 up front. 95 YJ D30 had the bigger U-joints, but you could get the bigger shafts from a lot of XJs and swap em in.

well RenegadeT the one im looking at is a 89 but has had a 4.0 swap it's a motor and trans from a 90's cherokee and it is auto trans.

I have only one thing to add. Check the inside of the frame in front of the drivers rear tire where the fuel filter is. Crap tends to pile up in the cover if it has been off road and the frame can rust out there.
