I currently have a 1987 YJ, 350 TBI 700R4, 231, Waggy Dana 44's front and rear 5.13's rear Spool 4 inch lift SUA with 36's and TJ flares. It does great and runs great. The only complaint I have is lack of room sometimes. The wife is pregnant with kiddo #2. So between me, the wife 2, kids and a dog the YJ is gonna bring the suck. I have a 14' JK all stock with 3.73 and a rear LSD. Should I keep the YJ or sell it and build the JK. I go to Uwharrie maybe 10 times a year and various other camping wheeling sites 3-5 times a year.

I voted for sell the YJ and build the JK. A semi built JK can do everything at URE and can still hit alot of other obstacles at the other places. My thinking is that if you will be hauling your family and dogs, you arent gonna be hitting cream puff in it. Small lift, 4.10s, 33s, and lockers will take you anywhere you wanna go with all of the seats occupied.

I would do a custom stretch to the YJ for the needed room. It sounds like it is already built as a perfect trail rig. I'm not a fan of wheeling new expensive rigs. I like not having to worry about getting dents and scratches, breaking windsheilds etc when I flop or roll.

I would sell the JK and put some money in stretching the YJ like drkelly said. Its already set up as your trail rig and you wont get the money out of it that you feel its worth anyway. The 350 and 700r probably get as good a mileage on a long trip as a v6 jk would with a similar lift and tires, so I wouldn't think there would be a big difference there to make a decision on.

In your situation sell the YJ, and build the JK the right way. Use qaulity parts, address the soft spots and you will have a capable and reliable Jeep that doesnt need to be trailerd and will haul the whole family. They are very easy to build up and very capable even in stock form, so you will still be happy with what you are capable of doing as far as what trails and areas you go too.

Its all a question of what makes you happy,or ( benifits the family) as long as you keep on wheelin its a win.

Sell the JK and either stretch the YJ or.... Swap drive train from YJ into something bigger. Wagoneer or commando perhaps. You have a very universal setup and if it all works then you're already two steps ahead. You can always buy a stock JK again.

I got a little insight here

The yj is paid for right? Two kids are going to limit your time on the trail, the money you can spend on building the jk. The yj is wheel able now, and the jk can take you the wife and two kids to mall, store or wherever very comfortably

I have three kids and a almost finished new buggy that will spend most of its life in my garage just getting stared at, but then again I probally would have still built my buggy, my wife does say I am her fourth kid

Either way you should be happy getting any trail time with young kids in either rig

Awesome. Any more shower pearls of wisdom or personal insights you want to share?

Yes.
Going seven days without exercise makes one weak.

I hated to part out my YJ :(

So much blood sweat and tears went into that rig, building my JK hasn't been as fun because most of the parts are new.

If you drive to the trail, get yourself a trailer to carry all your camping and not for trail needed other stuff. If the dog is a small one no biggie, if it's a large breed, make a good dog box and let him/her ride comfy in the trailer. And also, it's gonna be a couple of years before you will have the newest kid on the trail.
