I'm thinking about taking my wife down south NEXT weekend for our anniversary. Any thoughts, comments, or suggestions?

If you like quiet, and want to hang out on the beach and have a few places to eat for dinner, then go to topsail island. If you want to shop and see shows more then relax on the beach, go to myrtle Beach. If you want to wonder around more history, and be in a more eclectic area, then go to Wilmington. That is my opinion!

Emerald Isle would be pretty nice and quiet this time of year. There is not a lot to do outside of hanging out on the beach, but that is fine with me. We have a place at Atlantic Beach, on the other side of the Island. There is more in Emerald Isle than there.

We've kinda done Myrtle Beach. She's not a shopper. I'm REALLY considering Atlantic Beach/Emerald Isle now that a co-worker suggested eating at the Sanitary Fish market & Restaurant.

Well, if it were me, I would not go to the Sanitary. It's just a fried fish house. Nothing special other than being on the water and overpriced. If you go up to AB, Check out Amos Mosquito's. It's great food, atmosphere, and the service is killer. http://www.amosmosquitos.com/

Channel Marker, Amos Mosquito's, ooohh....dude....El's Super Burger! It's a local legend! Yall gotta go there and get a shrimp burger! There are some other small places that are great too, but it's been a while since I've been down that way.

If yall like quaint and historic stuff, you could check out downtown New Bern on the way back. Lots of good eats down there and plenty of history. Morehead, Atlantic Beach, and Emerald Isle are awesome too.

I love Wilmington. We head down there as much as we can. me and my wife were married on Wrightsville beach. that would be my recommendation. hit up tower 7 on Wrightsville.

....x2 go stay anywhere that is oceanfront from Atlantic Beach to Emerald Isle. Fort Macon is another historic place to explore and sightsee w a great beach and good fishing in the surf and inlet. The Channel Marker is romantic and Amos's is a mile away, both w dining on the water and great food. The Crab Shack in Salterpath, and Sanitary - Morehead City have fine seafood too.

Love to go to the Crab Shack for lunch. Best hushpuppies I've ever had

Ruddy Duck is good too. Also No Name Pizza has pretty good pizza.

If your in for an eating adventure find "the Spot"

If you goto Atlantic dont forget about beaufort. its right across the bridge and has the maritime museum and some cool places to eat.

Beaufort is definitely nice to visit. I like walking the boardwalk and looking at the boats. There is also a boat building guild or something there where they usually have an old wood boat being built. I think it's volunteer driven.

Its part of the Maritime Museum. They build the boat that is being raffled off in the museum and other special projects throughout the year. Most of the folks there are volunteers but there is one or two that are full time employees of the museum.

I'll put in a vote for Emerald Isle. Nice and quiet with a few good things to do nearby. The aquarium is really nice!

If you make it to Carolina Beach make sure you visit the Fat Pelican.
Its a neat place to grab a beer.

Eat a shrimp burger or cheeseburger or both surrounded by seagulls in the parking lot of El's Drive In in Morehead City before crossing over the bridge.
I left that area in the early 90's but it sure was darn good back then.

I go to Carolina a lot... Fat Pelican is really cool, but I always spend a fortune.
I spend most of "NIGHT TIME" at The Dive, pretty much the only place at CB that gets a little crazy, but thats why the cops sit out front.
Wilmington is cool for a day trip, we usually start out with Lunch at Front Street and several beer samples, then walk around and hit the bars, hit the serpentarium, etc... Always a good time.
Not a cheap trip but always a blast.
Anytime I take a girl down with me we take the ferry to Southport, nice little boatride, some cool shops... So thats something to consider also IMO.

A buddy of mine used to be the city manager of South Port. He told me about the good, bad, and ugly!

Nags Heads is where I go for a beach get away...but any time I go to Emerald Isle I stock up on Michaelangelos pizza. That's all I got for you.

Dock St. Oyster Bar in Wilmington. My favorite.

In Carolina Beach, the Shuckin Shack, Gibby's and the Silver Dollar.

None of these are "Anniversary" places. You go there for the food, drink and people watching. Later, you have the anniversary... ;-)

I second South Port of you get near it. Its nothing for me to make the three hour drive just to go eat at the Provisions Co. and have the grilled tuna steak. Its amazing, then the ice cream across the street. I love South Port.

Had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend in the Atlantic Beach/Emerald Isle area and everywhere in between. Highly recommended and we will be revisiting.
