We are going up to Uwharrie tomorrow. I am debating on taking my offroad trailer with me. In South Carolina we do not tag our trailers. I dont think that is as much of a problem as I do not have lights for the trailer. I am not planning on towing it at night at all, the trailer is painted bright yellow anyway. What is the possiblity for getting pulled over for it?

To tell you the truth i didnt look. Since the trailer is so small, i could actually put a reflective triangle on the back. I did read on the NC statutes on the forum that if the tailights of the towing vehicle are visible, then the trailer is not required to have lights.

If its legal in SC then its legal in NC. I thought SC required lights like NC does?

Im not sure about that.

I was ticketed in NC for not having a tag on my boat...it was dropped when I went to court, but I was stopped and ticketed and the judge made it clear that once I crossed state lines I had to comply with the state I was in.

Regarding the lights, I *think* that if the tow rigs brake/signal lights can be seen from behind the trailer then you are all right.

in NC, if the trailer is designed to haul something, then it has to have tags, and lights. But if its an rti ramp, or a pig cooker (think farm equipment) tags, and lights are not required.

If there's a pig or a propane tank on the cooker, it's hauling property and has to have a tag. If it's empty, it can go without.

WOW, now that's getting a little picky.

What if there's a squirrel or some spiders riding on you RTI ramp? Then you're hauling levestock.

SC does require a tag on a trailer over 2500lbs. Even if its not, I would put a tag on it if you are traveling through other states.
The fee $20.00 or you can get a permanent tag for $87. Not much money for the tag, it will cost more than that with the first ticket.
