This is for a 1999, Auto Trans. 4.0. 4X4

Buddy of mine had the Check Engine Light scanned at AZ and told him he needed an Outbound Speed Sensor?

I have no idea what he's talking about...

Does anyone know what this is?

I know what the VSS, the ABS sensors at each wheel, and on some autos I have seen an output sensor.

Im sure they meant the output shaft speed sensor. It should be on the driverside of the transmission towards the rear. It will be a plastic "nut" with a wiring harness plugged into it. It just unscrews from the transmission body but some fluid will come out so have a catch pan ready. The VSS on the jeep will be in the rear of the transfer case and controls the speedometer and goes to the computer for controlling fuel and idle. The output shaft sensor goes to the computer to control transmission shifting.

was it "outbound" or "outboard"? Grand cherokees have an ABS sensor at the wheels sometimes called an outboard speed sensor. Is the Jeep also showing an ABS light?

Fixed it for ya. WE're your buddy at? If its an abs code I can scan that side of the ecu for you guys.

4.0 4x4.... with a sensor code no ones ever heard of.....

you sure its a jeep and not a land rover?

There is no sensor on a 99 WJ called an outbound speed sensor, the output speed sensor is mounted on the drivers side rear of the transmission(OD unit on a 42RE which is behind the 4.0L).
They are prone to failure.

I beleive the rear transmission sensor is correct..

The FSM referred to it as the OUTPUT speed sensor. I'll know when I get the part for sure.

Thanks everyone.
