Does anyone know what overdrive will live in an older Chevy dually?I have a turbo400 now,any ideas?Thanx for your suggestions.

the 700 can be built to tow well
the 4l80 is pretty much ready to go.

A 4l80 will cost much more to get in there and will probably require a stand alone CPU controller.

A 700 will go in pretty easy but you will drop coin making it live.

Wouldnt tow in OD with either though IMO....

Gear Vendors should live fine. Folks are using them to pull 15K+ loads in CTD Dodges and much less in the Fords

Seems their pretty proud of them though. Depending on how many miles you do per year, it may be cheaper to pay the fuel differences than upgrade.

Skyhi5 - why would you not tow in OD in the 4l80 ? While its not an Allison it tows just fine in od.

My brother has a 72 chevy dually with a TH400 and a OD unit on it. He hasn't used it much but its been living just fine behind a 383 w/ alum heads that was built to haul hay and horses... Those units cab be picked up for $500-1000 and might be the cheapest overall.

A 4L80 is beef, no doubt. And maybe I should have been a little more thorough in my statement. To me an overdrive in an under load situation is asking for trouble. Will it survive, sure but you are needlessly over working your engine and over shifting your transmission. When I tow with an OD, I leave it in D or turn Tow/Haul on. If I get on a long (relative) flat stretch of Interstate I will put it in OD and take it out manually when conditions change.

I am admitedlty overly cautious with any auto tranny, and I get great life out of them (The wife's Yukon 4L60 with 190k on it and more tow jobs that it was never intended for than i can count comes to mind)

Thanx for everyones replies:beer:Ill be looking at a Gearvendors unit

The hardest thing on an automatic is the shifts. If you can limit them manually, the transmission should last a long time.

I have the 4l80 in my truck and it will not down shift with the tow haul mode unless you stab it. I usually keep it in od, and manually shift as needed. Works great for me, as with 410 gears i dont want my engine screaming around all the time. Oh and this is 02 2500 Chevy with 6.0 gas.
