Overwhelmed by winch choices

I like the custom metal solenoid cover on that one, never seen one like that. It certainly looks like an 8274 to me. If it truly is an 8274 (vice being a Bellevue, which looks somewhat similar) it is not a '72, because they didn't start making 8274's until 1974. That said, Googling that part number leads me to believe that what you have there is an 8274 that was originally sold by Jeep. Check out this link for some interesting info on the 8274.
 
Yup, spoke with owner and he confirmed that it is a Jeep specific winch made by Warn. It must pre-date the 8274. We settled on a price and I'm picking it up in a couple days. He says it operates fine and looks to only need a bit of cosmetic work. It's gonna look great on the front of my 3B. Thanks for all the help here guys!

Only things to check for on those:

1. Make sure it's not leaking from the drum seal at the bottom of the gearbox. The drum seal is only $20-30 if it needs one, but it means tearing down the winch to get the spool off. Easily done in an evening.

2. Make sure it powers in and out. If it doesn't, it's probably a bad solenoid. I replaced all four solenoids on mine with a contactor from Superwinch. It was about $100.

3. Make sure it free spools easily. If it doesn't, it's probably because the spool support plate (opposite the gearbox side) isn't well aligned with the gearbox, so the spool is binding.

4. If the motor craps out eventually, look into doing the 4.6HP swap. That's the motor that was included on the later 8274s. Should pull harder, faster, and not break any gears.
 
You guys really steered me right. Warn is an awesome company (the guy in customer service was all excited about my vintage winch), the look is perfect for that period winch on my vintage CJ, and I got a great deal ($400) and it works flawlessly. Thanks again.
