I have a 96 F-350 with the 7.3 and 362K on it.Today after gettin fuel I went to shut it off at home and it started idleing rough and the check engine light came on.I was goin to have it scanned but it will not build enuf good rpms to pull the truck.I changed the filter and added some fuel conditioner but it hasnt helped. The truck will run right for a few seconds upon restart and then the problem reoccurs.
From time to time it will clear up and idles correct for a few minutes but goes back to the rough idle.I have checked all the fuses and the battery voltage is 14.4 volts on both batteries.
It has had a new lift pump installed last summer and a crank PS about two years ago,but I dont know what color it was.
I have been lookin around the net and my symptons seem to indicate a bad valve cover gasket. Is there anyway to test it to make sure before I drop $90 for a new gasket?? I know you can have a "buzz" test done but that goes back to not bein able to get it to a shop. How can I retrieve the codes since I cant get it to be scanned??

That sounds plausible....IIRC, the valve cover gasket has some electronics running through it or something important like that. Also, if I'm not mistaken, the injectors rely on oil pressure to work properly.

the problem could be the harness under the valve cover, they sometimes comes unpluged from the gasket. depends what the code is , it could be icp pressure. check the oil. make sure it is full and not old. low oil or old oil which will foam up will cause a similar promlem since the hp pump takes the oil and boost it up to 500 psi ( cranking ) up to 3000 psi ( full throttle ).
