paint gun

after years with the rattle can i'm planning to upgrade to a real paint gun. i have been thinking of picking one up but have no idea what to look for. is there a one gun does it all (bed liner, undercoat, primer, base coat, clear coat), or do you need a different gun for all of them? is it like every thing else out there you get what you pay for, or can you buy cheap and get away with it?
 
No theres really no gun that does it all. You'll want different guns for different things. A clear gun will have the smallest opening or nozzle, and if you get an undercoat gun that will have to have a major opening or nozzle I would imagine. You can buy fairly cheap and they will still work good. Just get gravity fed for sure and stay away from suction fed.

If your just getting into it, go get this, i've seen it used and it does well enough.

If you have a small compressor, and/or want to upgrade to a better finish, hvlp is the way to go

or if you want a real slick job, this gun is good esp. for clear (me and a friend use it when we paint)(its cheaper elsewhere though)

I have never sprayed bedliner or undercoating but, I was under the impression your really just gonna have to use something like this, that stuff is really thick it wouldn't spray out of a normal paint gun.

big thanks for the info.

i've got a good 30 gal compresor, so i'm thinking that i should have enough air. most of the stuff that i paint with a rattle can has been small parts but i'm planning on building a roll cage soon and some fenders, and would like them to have a decent paint job. not really looking at spraying entire vehiles (yet).
 
I agree that a Cheap HVLP gun from harbor Freight will work pretty good. IF you know what you are doing you can get a fairly good paint job from it. If you want a professional looking paint job you will need a lot of experence(first) and a good HVLP gun that will run you $300 and up. Buying a expensive gun with out the experience is throwing money away. Good Brands are Sharpe, SATA, Devilbiss most of those will give you a good finish. I personaly use a have been using a SATA jet for the last 7 years and like it a lot.
 
What about good ol' Wagner Power Painters? How do they stack up if just for going over old paint jobs, etc. with touchups?
