My CJ is now "rough" steel

I took it to have it sandblasted, and now the metal is dull and slightly "rough"

I'm going to paint it with rustolium paint. A gallon, and run it thru my paint gun.

My main question is: Does this steel need primer? I know NORMAL paint does...but rustolium is made for bare metal, is it not? I know whre I have to fix dents with fiberglass I WILL prime, but I was wondering about the bare metal primarily

I am 99% sure you want to prime it dude...there IS a bare metal rustoleum, but it really is for rusty metal! Since yours is in good shape, buy the rustoleum primer and shoot it first!

It will also help your paint stick to the jeep better. (I realize you have read this Troy, but for others, a quick link to the $80 paint job article)

You will see we used a white rustoleum primer on BUG. This also has the benefit of giving your entire rig a single color you are painting over. If it is multicolor, that will effect your paint colors.

Hope that helps! (Won't cost much for the rustoleum primer either dude...)

When i redid mine I used primer first, rustoleom actually sells an "automotive" primer. It make the adhesion of the paint that much better IMHO

:stupid: Did the same to mine..

Worked well, but I notice the paint comes on in flakes when the rocks grab it. Might be the oil in the DOM though... hard to get all of it out.

Acetone seems to work best for degreasing oily steel IMO, anybody know of anything better?

I used Acetone and mineral spirits all over the thing...

I suspect it's the oils because where the paint has come off, it's not rusting.. ;)

Rich not sure about your yota, but a lot of auto makers used some galvanized metals. the paint does not stick very well there at all. and will come off in flakes. just curious as to where it's comming off, if it's like on the cage then this or course does not apply to you at all since most of your rig is cage.

Yeah, on the cage only. Despite my efforts, the body that's left has no rock rash as of this writing.. ;)

I was given the tip of using Vinager to neutralize galavanized metals by a very good body man once? Never tried it...

Self etching primer on bare metal. Let it cure as long as possible so the chemicals will cure and evaporate. Spray away.
