My 89 XJ has places where it appears to have had engine coolant sprayed back on it and the clear coat is real white. I have seen this on several cars and trucks ect, but curious if you took some compound wax and buffed it, would you get rid of the bad and find good color beneath ??

Then I think some clear coat spray bomb and it would look a lot better.

Anyone know for sure?

Chip, I will ask my pop... I suspect the clear coat might could be buffed (rubbing compound might be too harsh though for modern clear coats)

When he responds I will post back here

if the clear coat is turning white or " chalky" it has started breaking down. if you try to buff you take it down to the base coat. base coat has no gloss just color. sounds like it is about time for a paint job.

Chip, here is my dad's reply:

IF it is smooth - not pealing & just gray/white, then sand real light with 3000 grit paper (nothing more coarse that 2000 for sure), then buff / compound.
If it is still gray/white, you can repeat .........

IF the gray / white is gone, just wax it and you are done.

Watch carefully, IF at any time the color starts to show up on your sand paper, that means you have sanded through the clear coat. STOP ( be vary careful not to sand through the color coat - and it will not be very thick), and then spray a little of the clear from the spray bomb on it - to seal it and give it shine.

Note: don't use the spray bomb unless you have to. AND putting clear over the white/ gray will just seal it in - maybe leave it a bit shiny, but it will still be there.
