What is the best/safest way to paint walls over stairs? Scaffolding? Or are the adjustable-leg ladders really safe?

Need to paint the hallway walls over the stairs that go down into the basement. At the base of stairs, ceiling is 16' up there. Only 3.25(ish) feet between walls going down, and landing at the base is only about 3' long.
Seems the scaffolding would have to a weird size (3'x10').

get a paintball gun, and have fun. I know that is no help, sorry.

Seriously, place a ladder on the steps and rest it on the wall, use a long handled roller, for the larger areas, and then climb the ladder for the other areas.

Iam not being funny but a friend of mine uses stilts for stairs and cathedral cielings. I have tried and I have trouble on them, I know this probably no help but its what he does on his crew

Ladder to get the corners, then long-handle roller for the big areas.

We had our stairwell walllpapered several years ago...I built up a simple scaffold with 2x4's and plywood that I had in the shop...didn't take but a few minutes and was sturdy enough to support the gal's stepladder on top.

This is what I did when we painted the hallway in our second floor, which also ran into the stairwell area. I put my big ladder on the bottom step and leaned it up against the high wall. Then ran long 2x10 or 2x12 from a hig step on the staircase to to a step near the top of the ladder. I was able to climb over the railing from floor#2 to my 2x10. It was pretty sketchy, but I made do with what I had.

We just paid to have our 2 story foyer painted because my wife is scared of heights and I cannot work above my head due to nerve damage in my shoulder. The pros used a ladder to do the corners and trim, and a really long handled roller for the rest.

Use an extension ladder and put a block on the lower step to level it up. Make sure you have someone holding the ladder too.

I have also heard of the stilts too, although im not a big fan of them.
