Patriotic or disrespectful? The United States flag.

I want to hear some opinions on flying the american flag behind a vehicle.
Specifically, a large one meant for a flag pole.

We have all seen this, and some of you may have done this, but I want to hear people opinions on flying an American flag behind a truck, SUV, etc. on a daily basis... (I understand for parades etc.)

Most people do this in the name of patriotism. I appreciate their attitude, but i just don't like to see the flag get shredded by the wind, muddy, filthy, and in some cases melted from contact with the exhaust or drug on the road.

What is everyone's opinion?

Does it offend you on a ship?

What about on the back of a fire truck? Or a redneck chick in an American Flag bikini?

I believe proper use of the flag dictates it only be used as a flag.

I have no problem with it in the back of a truck, or a Confederate flag on a truck for that matter. Plus as an added bonus it gives me a heads up on the usual first impression

I am not offended by it really. I just wanted to see what other people thought.

I just saw a flag on the back of a squatted truck the other day. It was dragging the ground and was all dirty.
I doubt they did it on purpose, but i did not care for the way that flag was being drug on the road.

We have them on the apparatus at the FD. We typically replace them every year before the Fourth of July parade unless something happens to them and they warrant earlier replacement. As for pickups, motorcycles, etc. dragging the ground or anything like that would bother me, and something that really gets on my nerves is when it is flown on the incorrect side of the vehicle, especially when flown with other flags.

its not a holy relic. its a symbol. when you begin to treat a symbol as a holy relic, the purpose can be forgotten in leu of fanaticism. This in turn results in blind patriotism, which is the antithesis what the American republic is supposed to stand for. blind patriotism is what resulted in patriarchs taking advantage of people, which resulted in the mass exodus to create America. Which is also synonymous with blind credence, which results in credence to Titles of Nobility (very unAmerican).

I may as as well fly the flag, I am all out of fucks to fly.

This is America, if they can stomp & burn the flag. They sure as hell fly it from their truck, their boat or from their ass.

Protected under first amendment.

As long as it's not tattered, dirtied, and holed, I have no issues with it - although it does seem a little out of place unless it's for parades, the Fourth, or other events.

The Confederate battle flag is a different story...

Unfucking believable! Idiots!
They had the editor of the schools news paper on Tucker Carlson about an hour ago.I looked for the video but I couldnt find it,guess it is still to soon. You would have LOVED that guy.

Amherst's an interesting place. Two liberal arts schools, and the main campus for Zoomass (University of Massachusetts).

I grew up in Boston, and the Globe's stance these days is interesting. 30 years ago, they were very much in favor of forced busing programs. The well-known photo of the guy about to be beaten with the American flag ran for the other paper in town...

To me it's about being "In a respectful manner". Which unfortunately can be vague and interpreted differently by different people.
Note on most ships, it's at or near the bow, not the stern; and IIRC the flag code requires that it be placed at the "front" of the room, not the back, when possible or appropriate. At least that's what I was taught. The reason is because this is the part people see first or will be mostly looking toward, and not the part that "come later" or is hidden. So based on similar logic, really it shouldn't be hanging off the back of your truck, but instead put near the front.

Again - subtle differences but it it's those little things that add up to the difference between respectful vs not.

I also think there's a difference between classy and gawdy or egotistical. What is your point of having a giant flag that is as big as or moreso than the vehicle? It can come across as "HEY LOOK AT ME I'M SUPER PATRIOTIC, EVERYONE ELSE GO TO HELL" rather than just a key piece of a whole ensemble. During a parade, the point is to show spirit. Great. Driving to work in 8 o'clock traffic, you can look like a douche.
Maybe not disrespectful to the flag or the country, but just not a good way to represent yourself. JMHO.

We've kinda had this discussion somewhere else. I said I didn't like it on the back of trucks.... someone posted a pic of one flying off the back of a Jeep in wartime... I said that's not really the same..... blah blah blah.... everyone has a different opinion. I like what some have said, that it's all about a respectful manner in which you fly it. If it's hanging off the back of your truck covered in road grime and soot from your "turned up" squatted douche truck because you're too damn lazy and ignorant to respect it and what it represents, just because you think it's gonna get you some fat girl poon. Then yes, it is disrespectful and IMO you're no better than these liberal twats that are burning it and stepping on it........

With consent.

Just curious, have you listened to any of Milo Yiannopoulos's lectures? As a British-born gay man, he has some pretty refreshing views on political correctness.

Keep it clean and off the ground. Only on special times. Started it in high-school.

I flew a full size flag on my YJ starting on 9-11. Mostly on the beach or trail not on the highway. It naturally git tattered after a while. All flags do, on buildings etc. I came to see the tatters as a badge of honor the that flag wore and a reminder of what happened that day. I keep it in a drawer in a ziplock to protect it. While I don't fly it, I know that someday somebody, one of my sons maybe will ask "why is that flag so tattered"? And I'll have an answer.

Dirt, exhaust, etc does not belong on a flag and I'd have no problem pointing that out in a hopefully tactful way.

I now have a much stronger and smaller flag that will also eventually tatter that flies on a flag pole on the Heep, mostly when parked. I did fly it in the Back the Blue ride but that again adds character.

Feel differently? That's ok. Just don't let me see anybody burn one...
