We are going to have our gravel driveway paved in asphalt and are looking for some recommendations for contractors. We have already had two quotes, but were not impressed with their work on previously completely jobs they gave as references. The house is located about half way between Stokesdale and Oak Ridge, so they probably need to be in the Triad area.

Thanks,
Danny

If only you were closer. I know more concrete contractors than any normal person should.

I'll ask some of the guys in the service dept. tomorrow

We know most of the paving contractors in the state.

Talking my language, asphalt superintendant for 20 yrs. Whatcha need?
Seen too many people get ripped off-1)asphalt is a "mat" no stronger than what is under it--2)ask how many tons, don't fall for sq.' it is misleading-3)call plant and get a cash sale price per ton-4)compare total material price and total job price= lay down cost, figure in any prep work also-5)mix should be I-2 grade about 25%stone,(pea size) plant will also supply info-request a ticket from plant to verify load amount and type mix.-6)would reccomend 2'' laid= about 1.5' rolled.-7)mix when laid 280-330deg.-9)can be checked with meat thermo.-air temp at least 45deg for small job to look good, guarantee no puddles when raining will cause weak spot. Driveway is a shaped like a 'P'. Total length is about 300ft. I was thinking about having it 13-14 feet wide since that is about how wide the gravel is now. Just looking for a quality job that won't crack like others we have seen.

Any asphalt will crack eventually, I paved my father-inlaws laid it about2.5'' any thicker and you will have to do two layersto get compaction. It has lasted 10 yrs. with no issues, the key is to keep heavy equipment off of it especially on hot days and maintain good maint(sealers) to keep water from seeping under to subgrade below and x2 in freezing areas. As mentioned above the plant should supply all info without any problem. Price per ton here in the east is around 75-85 bucks depending on where the plant has to get materials(stone, sand and liquid asphalt) Did someone say something about asphalt? Don't get me started. :bounce2:
