I recently bought something from a member here using PayPal. A day or two after I sent him the money, I had a few unexpected things come up. I stayed in touch with the seller the entire time, and he agreed to refund my money without hesitation. He even agreed to hold the items for me until I get ready again. He sent the PayPal refund or whatever, but it's not showing in my history, nor is the money in my PayPal account (balance), nor is the money in my bank account. Any advice?

How long has it been???? If just today then sometimes it takes a few mins before it posts. If it's been a day or three then file a claim w pay-pal and they will put a hold on his account for the amount BUT you can about count on him not holding onto the parts if you go that route He might have already spent the money and is having to put money back into the account before he can issue a refund and that can take 3-4 days.

The original transaction was on the 14th. I'm certainly not saying anything is his fault or that I'm upset with him (he knows this), I'm just trying to figure out how to get the money back into my bank account. Does it automatically go back into my bank account, or will I have to transfer it?

in my account history, it shows the transaction on the 14th, the status is "canceled", and then down below that it says "related transaction" with the same date, "add funds from a bank account", the status is "uncleared", and the details are "..."

It should go right back into pay-pal but you'll have to transfer it from pay-pal back into your bank account (unless you have a PP debit card) and that'll take 3-4 days.Another thing he might have made a mistake in your email addy and it's showing refunded in his end but it didnt go to you.

I got an email from PayPal saying that he sent me a full refund. From what I'm seeing, the money hasn't come out of my bank account yet from the original transaction, but my bank account definitely shows that it has.

Paypal refunds take up to 7 business days to process (from the day the refund was requested by the account holder). I just did one last month and thought the same thing you did. I contacted Paypal and found out the details. It went through just like it was supposed to 7 business days later.

Paypal can take forever to process a refund.

Here's the problem: you have your bank account linked to paypal with no 'backup' method of payment (ie credit card). So you transfer some money out of your checking account to some other guy.

Paypal doesn't have that money. They'll put the transfer in motion, but they're waiting to get the money from your bank before they make it 100% final. It might take 7-10 days for them to get those funds from your bank.

Meanwhile, the other guy refunds the transaction. Paypal still doesn't have the money. They can't give you the money back, because they haven't gotten it from your bank yet. For all they know, it's an overdraft and they'll never see a dime. So they're not going to put funds back in your account that you can then transfer to somebody else.

As soon as they get paid by your bank, they'll put the money wherever it's supposed to be, then you can transfer it to somebody else or put it back in your bank account.

Paypal gets a lot of shit for this, but it's pretty much the same way your bank works.

If you don't want to deal with the delays, link a credit card to your paypal account. That gives them a second option for getting funds from you, and they'll do instant transfers after that.

^^This!^^

I just went thru a nightmare where I sent funds to a cat in WI for an X-pipe, but accidentally used a linked bank account that had been closed for months. I immediately transfered funds from the correct bank account...

In the meantime, he received the funds, shipped the part, & I rec'd it (hell, I installed the X-pipe the day it arrived!). 3 days later, the original bank transfer failed Y PP put a hold on the second transfer... then reversed his funds, opened a claim against me & told me it would take *another* 3-5 biz days for the 2nd transfer to post...

The next day, PP released my funds, he got payed, & all was well, but it sure made me look like a scammer at first!

BUT you can about count on him not holding onto the parts if you go that route He might have already spent the money and is having to put money back into the account before he can issue a refund and that can take 3-4 days.
contrary to popular belief, there are still people in this world that do what they say they are going to do. i am one of them. justin, just let me know when you've got things straight, and i'll send everything out to you. in the mean time it's not going anywhere, unless you tell me you don't want it anymore. no worries...
