Performance prescription eyewear suggestions?...

I'm in the market for some new glasses. The last time I wore glasses for more than 24 hrs straight I was 11 years old. Looking for some suggestions...

I'm a contact wearer but over the past couple of years I've started using my glasses more and more as the contacts don't stay as comfortable for as long throughout the day as they used to.

The last set of glasses I bought was at least 5 years and about 3 prescription increases ago. They're barely holding together now and they suck because the field of vision is very restricted due to the 'hip' styling of the thin frames (when I purchased them I didn't really care as I never really wore them anyway...the hot girl selling them to me said they looked better)

Honestly I wouldn't mind going back to glasses more if I could find some that were somewhat tough and still kept a decent field of vision.

Don't really want to shoot lazers in my eyes yet and I haven't found any other brand of contacts that perform any better than what I have now.

Something sorta wrap around that'd give some protection from the elements in a Ultra 4 racing situation would be nice as well.

Are the auto shade change things worth a crap for a separate sunglasses alternative?

I remember fogging being an issue when I would play as a kid. I would imagine there's some material out now that takes care of that...?

Any materials out tough enough for a safety glasses substitute to be used in a welding/grinding/machining environment?

There's so much interweb shit to shovel through when I try to search...looking for some personal experience.

Thanks.

Are you talking about eyeglasses or prescription sunglasses?

Either way, Oakley makes nice stuff. I have some of their eyeglasses and I wear them all day sitting at the computer. Then I leave work and put on some Oakley sunglasses. They have lots of styles. You don't have to get Frogskins or look like a Lance Armstrong wannabe.

The auto darkening glasses do work, if you are in the sunshine. They don't do so well driving a car though.
My company bought my safety glasses, and hold up to all you said, but they look dorky and the side shields just recently come off because they killed my peripheral vision. I would love to have some in prescription that fit like the plastic Z87 glasses I usually wear. they are very comfy

Will, look into Smith Optics. I used to do sales for wholesale outfitters company. Out of all the glasses on the market they have the most technology in their lenses.

Side by side they are far superior to Oakley, Spy, or any of the other big names out there.

Prescribed!

I can't wear contacts, I wear glasses except when I'm on the trail and it gets annoying not being able to see clearly. I don't think my prescription saftey work glasses can be scratched or killed but they look like regular glasses. I've been wanting something like you're describing Will.

I need to get off my ass and order a pair.

My dad has a prescription pair and they are awesome, he sails and has the fishing kind, they have a built in vent so they dont fog up.

I have friends with non prescription pairs, they are awesome glasses.
Word. I've got Wiley-X Black Ops Airrage sunglasses. They are Z87, so my company paid for them. I have zero complaints. If you get a pair that have the foam liner, order a couple extra liners. You'll thank yourself later.

I've been wearing glasses since the 3rd grade I think. I never tried contacts due to all the dirt bike riding I did most of my life. I'm not very fashion concious at all. I tried the auto darkening lenses several years back. Basically I thought they were not dark enough when outdoors. I currently use two pairs of glasses. One for inside, and one for outside.

These are my outdoor glasses (I have the black frames):

I put almost zero thought into them. I just went to this one store in Greensboro beside Outback retaurant and bought new indoor and outdoor glasses at the same time, and picked what I thought looked good. They wrap around, and I have been happy with them.

I'm a cheap bass turd. Magnaflips work fine for me. I use the size that is a little smaller
than the typical aviator/ Smokey Bear. Progressives don't do well in small frames.

Progressive transition lenses from Costco eye shop run $180. Frame run $40 to $200.
At an eye shop attached to an doctor's office the same lenses are $450.

Prescription polarized lenses are wicked expensive. Flips are so much more affordable.
Another option are Bicycle glasses with Rx inserts. Love that type because I can change the lenses easily. Polarized for sunny, amber for overcast or shooting. And clear if I just want eye protection.

I buy eyeglasses that come with the polarized dark lenses that have the magnetic clipons. I find it easier than carrying prescription shades and regular lenses. I am on about my third pair. I have no lines bifocals and the setup works fine.

I have considered the some Smith Optics specialized lenses that will fit in Smity ski goggles. I can't see well enough with contacts - especially now that I need bifocals to see the ground and something to see farther down the slope to know where the trail is headed.
