Pet tax???

So I found out I have a pet tax in my county. And come to find out ALL of the major counties in NC have some sort of pet tax (on dogs and cats only). Coming from TN, The regulatory staff is slightly different per county but all meaning to address the same reasoning: rabies control.
Does this tax seem redundant and negatively adverse to addressing the purpose or am I missing something?

So, it seems to me that everyone who can afford general taxes like this probably have pure breeds and such and their pets live better than anyone close to poverty level. And it seems that anyone (especially who has children) knows how easy it is to be persuaded to take in a stray rather than purchase an animal. But the penalties are regulated by the shelters (who get the money) who can only govern the tax for those who have their animal spayed or neutered and for those who register pure breeds for breeding purposes.

Blountly: Wouldn't this cause most of the poverned residents in these counties to NOT spay and neuter??? And wouldn't the possibilities of someone having a semi-wild dog or cat running around in the woods becoming more frequently in contact with rabies infested animals to come from poverned residents as well??? And do you think a poverned citizen is going to choose to spay / neuter over for-say handing their children money for lunch at school??? Much less a case of beer!

The taxes range from $10-$25 per county for spayed/neutered and the fees are MUCH higher for dogs registered that are not spayed/neutered. Mainly pure breeds.

In my situation, our neighborhood has cats. We all feed them. I decided that I would take the honor in my own wallet to have the females (6 of them) spayed so that the population don't get out of hand by going through the SNAP system for a descent rate. But then I found this out. I feel certain none of my neighbors are going to claim them for taxes and I am NOT going to be the one to turn them in to animal control for they are doing more good than harm for me by keeping the mouse population to a minimal.

But it seems you can easily go around this by going through a friend or family that resides in a non pet-taxed county. The SNAP system only requires a drivers license and you can even qualify for discount equal to your income. (Which brings up another whole adverse affect of the government system that favors hand outs.)

Moving to NC from TN, this was the icing on my cake... I researched and NO TN municipality taxes pets. To me this just goes to show how desperate this state really is and how taxed you really are to live here... Not saying I'll be moving back just for the cats, but this was just pure wierd for me to accept??? Can someone explain to me what point I'm missing???

Coming from Florida, the taxes here suck! I agree with you.

I think the point is feral cats and dogs are costing millions of dollars to gubmnts to try to control and stop them from the horrible impact they have on peoples property and our precious wildlife. Feral cat's are destroying countless songbirds, baby and adult Rabbits,Squirrels,Turkey's, Quail etc. and harming pet cat's allowed to roam outside. TNR is a rediculas idea introduced by cat lovers as a way to "help" feral cat's and should be illegal IMO ( releasing non native animals to fend for themselves) Where is the compassion for the other before mentioned animals in this idea???. The cat loveing nut's don't care about the defensless animals these cat's kill everyday no matter how much you feed them, only their precious kitties. If you want a pet cat then get one and take care of it, otherwise they are a nuisance and killers of native animals and the feral cat's population is growing everyday. I'd rather have a mouse problem than a feral cat problem anyday and both can be trapped efficently............. unless the cat has been trapped before and released.

I think this should be moved to the garage ASAP

How come the google search of "ferrel cats" brings up absolutely nothing about this??? Actually, there are operations in several states to catch/ spay or neuter / and RELEASE????? Please explain your point above anything ELSE that prays on rabbits squirrels quail and such.

Just learning dude (the expansion of knowledge by putting on the opposite shoes), not flaming by no means.

Try FERAL or try TNR and be enlightened. A group is practicing TNR in my area right now and I'm about to try to stop this sensless idea to curb feral cat's populations. It is illegal to release non native animals to roam free most anywhere in this country, but somehow the catnut's are getting to do this anyway.

Same? I get things like "Operation Cat Nip" and "Feral Cat Frinds,Inc. and the list goes on and on with the "release". Why do I feel that a cat with balls can kill a bird the same as one without???

A dead feral cat, w or w/o balls, kills nothing and doesn't breed either. I think you have good interests in you situation, but be aware that feral spayed/neutered cat's will attract more and more to your catopia for you do deal with.

Sooo aren't we SORTA agreeing on the exact same thing? Wouldn't me taking the cats to get spayed describe exactly what you are saying and not ending me up in jail for animal cruelty????

Get a life and respond like in adult.

I never said anything about cruelty, Protecting my pet's and property from diseased feral cat's is not animal cruelty and you obviously have a very different idea on this matter than I. I respect your right to do what you want but will never agree w this mindset. Some folks love cat's, some love wildlife and cat's left to roam do great harm to wildlfe, that is a fact. Try to get the county to help w a feral cat problem and then chew some popcorn while you wait.

Just wondering mommucked...

1. How do you differ a feral cat from your neighbor's just out exploring?
2. How do you differ a feral cat from ones that are fed by every neighbor?

I am extremely open minded, just not thinking that every time a cat comes into my yard, I'm going to shoot it? I think that would get a person in alot of trouble unless you live out in the sticks with no neighbors. I just recently became attached to these cats and for some reason DID find myself a tad offended when you insinuated on your idea ways. But the way described from Durham Animal Shelter's website is that "the animal is rescued from the wild, neutered or spayed and then set up for adoption". Only advantage I see by contacting Animal Control is if we skip the neuter /spay fees and absorb the taxes after adoption??? What did you mean by me eating popcorn? At the shelter picking out my cats??? How did YOU think animal control works???

I would like some concrete reasoning before I accept anybody's personal opinions. I see criminal accounts for killing animals, but absolutely no support for shooting stray cats - nowhere publically??? And absolutely no reasoning for any decline of the wild by feral cats???

Maybe for your sake mommucked, this DOES need to go to the garage...:shaking:

My two cents. I have pets and keep them in my own yard. I get pissed when I see cats roaming in my landscaping as I paid good money to have this done. We have one jackass neighbor who doesn't spay or neuter and the cat population is getting out of hand. Other people's pets have no rights to try to live under my shed or trample my plants.
So back to the taxes, if I have to pay more as a pet owner and the county actually does something about said jackass I don't mind. Unfortunately the county doesn't so a few of us are going to fix it a different way.

I'm failing to see what the big deal here is.
You're worried that a $10-25 annual tax is going to push people out into the streets?
Anyone that owns a pet of any kind other than a goldfish (not taxed anyway) will spend more than that in food every few weeks.
The tax is lower for "fixed" (love that term b/c it implies they are broken from the get-go!) animals in order to encourage people to do it, or to capitalize on breeders.

What services are my pet taxes paying for? Forsyth county nor the state have done anything for my dog. My dog is always in my yard or on a leash when out of the yard. It may only be $10.00 or $12.00 but it is my money. Kind of like the federal pay raise, not enough to worry about?

^^^My main purpose was to propose the fact that I don't see taxing us on pets is going to solve anything...^^^

Plus, we're talking 6 cats here (females). There's 3 toms but I see the females as the issue? That's $90/year dude not counting $60 each to spay. I buy a bag ($12) every other month or so. I was only trying to do a good deed but found out it's going to cost me out the ass. So I've decided to sit back and add to the issue. I guess I was waiting on a mariacle answer besides breaking out the pistol. I see my neighbors going up into a tizzy if I shot one but on the contrary, they aren't going to pipe up and take any control either.

I guess I also saw the fact it was ironic NC is probably the only state to tax you even on your pets. I think with time, that will become the main beef of the thread. $15 per dog don't seem like much to some but you can't have one animal. I have always been taught to have 2 for company. So it adds up!!!

Hey I never said you should be paying the tax, if they aren't "your" pets you shouldn't be paying for them.
Call the county and tell 'em just like any taxable item, they should come repo them when you don't pay :D kill 2 birds at once that way.

There's no telling what the money is used for, my bet is it just goes into a general fund. It's essentially just a property tax like you pay on cars too. What does it solve? It brings $$ to the county.
There seems to be a general misconception that taxes levied on something must be used for something related to that thing that was taxed. But that's rarely how it works... the tax is just a way for the state to pick a specific source to draw revenue from. You pay tax on prepared food, does that go to some state food program? Nope.

We don't pay tax on pets here, or an annual property tax on vehicles, but guess what - the income tax is higher and so is real estate tax. I'd rather they have a really high tax rate on dogs since I don't own one...

Tennessee may not charge for pets but they also have the country's highest sales tax when you add in the county's chunk. So they are just getting their $$ in a different manner.

 Just

City of Raleigh used to charge something like $7 for spayed/neutered animals, but it was basically on the owners' honor to 'register'... I'm pretty sure they did away with it because it wasn't worth their time to do the paperwork. The only means of enforcement was if someone's animal was picked up by animal control and they weren't registered. Rabies tags are required, of course.

I don't like it when my neighbor's cats dig/crap/piss in my yard and it really infuriates the dogs when they come up on our front porch and stare in through the storm door, but I'm not going to do anything but yell at the cats... and roll my eyes when the neighbors send out an email that the cat hasn't been seen in a couple of days. An 'outside cat' is a dead cat, only because it's gonna get in a fight or get sick or get hit by a car eventually. Oh, we had a male marking by our front door for a while... I would have gladly let the dogs chase that one, but that was before we had the dogs.

Is it legal to hunt cats with a crossbow?
Only if it is a miniature crossbow

Wait till the statewide septic tank inspection fees kick in. :flipoff2: This in from NCDENR -DWQ, Mention of $100-150 annually. Wake county's getting ready to enforce their own soon even before DWQ gets their hands on it supposively around 2016.

And don't forget the twice taxed state taxes if you get a return.

If you consider BS taxes, NC gets away unnoticed for the BS taxes don't fall within Income / State / or Federal guides used to determine cost of living per state.

Who the hell can come up negative by selling liquor??? I think NC's the only state to own and govern all liquor sales. No wonder there's no distillaries in NC.

I can go on and on if you want to talk NC taxes... And compare to ANY border state with a NC big-time loose. NC is sooooo desperately broke. Systemly and income wise.
