I have never hit the trails at URE although I spend a lot of time camping up there. Most the pics and video I have seen were of stuff I wouldn't want to ride. My Jeep has lots of sentimental value and is in excellent condition, that I want to preserve. Recently it was suggested to me that I could ride some trails up there and not have any issues with damaging the vehicle. Was curious if anyone would suggest a trail to start off on. The CJ is stock except for motor craft 2100 carb, DUI ignition/distributer upgrade, black diamond 3" suspension lift, and 33's, all of which were added in last two years. Mechanically sound, but driven very little in last ten years, just a few times a year in fact. Would like to get out soon. Any suggestion on easy trails at URE for me to cut my teeth on?

First off, go with someone who is experienced and knows the trail system. You'll probably want to stay away from Daniel, Dickey Bell, and Dutch John. Rocky Mountain Loop is partially closed and the connector trails from one side will out you in unwanted territory. . You could come in from 553 before the double parking lot and ride over to slab pile. There are some rocks on the backside of RML but nothing too bad. Start on Falls Dam, Slab Pile, Wolf Den, and Saw mill and you should be ok.

That's way too nice of a CJ to beat on. If you just want to get her a little dusty there are lots of forest service roads throughout the state. If your heart is set on Uwharrie stay off the "D" named trails as mentioned before.

Did I say that is a really nice CJ?

Thanks guys. Assuming wolf den is one of easier trails after hearing from some of you. Saw this video of it on YouTube. Is this typical for wolf den? Maybe I am just getting old. Ha ha. Looks a bit challenging for an 'easy' trail.

Good looking rig danattherock! That's actually a video of my friend who had a stock Wrangler Sport (which may or may not have been a rental ) with the god awful Goodyear Wrangler RSA tires equipped. That was our second day back at the trail that weekend. The mud was awful. With good off road tires it's a lot less dramatic.

He was actually a bit more stuck before I took that particular video.

Aside from that particular spot, Wolfs Den wasn't that bad. However Falls Dam seemed much easier all in all. Worst trail we got onto was one that was part of Rocky Mountain Loop. It was scary for us!

As much money as fools are willing to pay for a nice CJ, I would leave that rig in the garage and buy a beater XJ to take wheeling.

Very nice CJ. There is nothing wrong with using it as it was intended. Just because you use it doesn't mean you have to beat on it. A little common sense will go a long way.

I agree with this, but theres always that chance. I've seen parked rigs get damaged from others mistakes, but hey, that was just my .02 .... I'm also a firm believer in "it's your vehicle, do what you want with it"

yeah URE as a whole can get tricky with one good shower, and one little slide can make perfect CJs into Juggies!! (i really just wanted to use that word)

That little spot on Wolf Den was getting pretty rough late last year thanks to all the rain. I know I used 3rd gear to get up.
