What's up with the hole in the hood? Maybe it's just me, (Just finished doing taxes and my eyes are tired.) but I can't see anything that would be in the way? Looks sweet for sure!

Looks like two hoops for support or something I guess. You can see them in the angled picture, especially on the front lip of the hood where it's notched.

Yeah, I had to lower the VW engine quite a bit from the stock location of the 1.3... I'm thinking about 5-7" below the crank line, you can see how low the crank is in the front pics... Intake and throttle body were gonna be above the hood line, so I built a "hood scoop" out of some tubing to protect when I roll... Didn't want a smashed intake ruining the drive home :driver:

That and the hood is lowered quite a bit from stock, so I didn't have much protection from the front clip without a cowl hoop (under the hood) and those bars going to the front... Looks kinda like the old eclipse bubble hood from the side...

Ok, I just couldn't see it last night. Any particular reason you chose a VW engine? I know they're decent engines, just never seen anyone run one in an off road rig before. (Besides the sand rails).

VW Engine

Well,I went through 3 1.3 Sammy motors in one season... That kinda sucked, and I drive this thing to and from the trails, so 5-6K on the highway with 4:10's and 37's sucked too... Could have easily gone with a 1.6 Suzuki variant, but everywhere I looked in the yards they were knocking or had holes in the block, not a good sign since I kept blowing the bottom ends out of 1.3's... I've had excellent luck with my VW cars in the past... Beat the hell out of em, rarely changed the oil and never had engine failures... So I decided to build up a sweet little VW for this rig... Its different which attracted me at first, everyone has a chebby motor, 22RE or a 4.0 Jeep engine...

VW engine should be a little more powerful than a 22RE they way I built it... Its much lighter than other options, and its a more compact fit... I wanted light weight to save on front axle parts...

Yep, I drive it everywhere I go in it... Tellico, Harlan, Windrock, etc...

The reason things take me so long to build is that they have to work both on and off the trail... Lights, steering, engine, brakes, etc. all has to be reliable and functional... I do carry tools, a full size 39.5 spare, some axle parts and driveshafts when i hit the trails... It has to drive nice, handle well and be safe for me to use it, and I usually have passengers with me as well...

That video is unrealistic of my driving behavior Michael

Damn, watching that video, I forgot how tall she once was... Its alot lower now, even with the bigger tires... And the only issue I had with that climb was that I didn't have enough motor... 1.3L of pure fury tried hard, but maybe the VDUB will help me out next time...

I dont know anything about VW motors but aren't most, if not all of them air cooled?
are you not worried that the slow moving, high rpms of trail use will over heat it?
